Deus not detecting 10p coin
I made a video to show this problem of the Deus not detecting modern 10p coins. It's me describing the problem then an example down the beach with the Deus easily finding a 20p coin, a 1992 10p coin but the Deus NOT detecting 10p coins from 2013/2014.

Any ideas on how to get the Deus detecting these coins? Even with zero discrimination, the machine struggled with what should be an easy target (for a top end machine or a basic machine!)
Thanks,
Steve

And we, as consumers/users of the coinage, have no say what the Royal Mint does when it produces modern currency. They sometimes ask for input on what designs they should have on the coins but they don't ask if the coins should be iron, silver, copper etc. That decision is taken at a much higher level based on bullion prices and on economic factors.
We pay for it, they design it, we spend it.
Do you think the shift to iron centred coins is due to the recent economic recession? Is this an attempt to save money? What's next? Plastic coins?
This is a trend throughout history, is it not? Short cross coins to long cross coins to avoid clipping. Silver coins to half silver coins to no silver coins.
Now copper and nickel to iron.
Detectors need to keep up with this debasement. My worry is the Deus is not keeping up. I think the machine came out in 2012 so it might not be up to date with the latest UK debasements.
Could XP create software for the Deus which would allow the machine to detect these iron core coins accurately?
Steve.

I've found 10p's no problem with the 11" coil... Struggles with 1p's though! Makes the high tone buzzy sound but a solid 86....!
£2 1 & 1/2 p found tonight lol

Q:"Do you think the shift to iron centred coins is due to the recent economic recession?"
A: It's due to soaring raw metal prices, particularly copper, though nickel isn't that cheap, either.
Q:"What's next? Plastic coins?"
A:The US have been using plastic money on their overseas military bases for a number of years, because of the expense involved in shipping huge cratefulls of cents and nickels etc around the world.
But steel and zinc are cheap enough to be viable coin metals for a long time to come.

Am I right in thinking that not finding these pesky low denomination coins is really a massive bonus? so long as they dont do a iron core pound coin... I'm delighted that the deus turns up it's nose at these waste of time coins!! its not that i'm rich... just want to reach official retirement in one piece!!

The new pound coin is almost certainly going to be iron-cored, though the 'cladding' is a bit more obscure...

Don't be daft lol.... I am not getting a true iron signal on these coins... I am digging them because the Deus still tells me there is something of interest there i.e. a solid number and quieter tone... it doesnt jump around or give a louder tone like a shaped rusty iron fragment would! Its just how you interpret the signals!oldartefact wrote:Ohhh ... in taht case i will need a new detector!!!Fusion wrote:The new pound coin is almost certainly going to be iron-cored, though the 'cladding' is a bit more obscure...

P.s. I too am not interested in digging 50 x 1p's and breaking my back doing so, however its nice to know the machine picks the coins up when essentially thats what its designed to weed out and tell me is there!

I just found this thread because I had the same problem with my Goldmaxx not picking up a new 5p sitting on the surface on Berrow beach last Tuesday. I went back over it a few times with different settings and it would not register. Its not a massive loss if I cant find these low denomination modern coins but the odd thing was I found at least six 1p coins buried between 4 and six inches in the sand, all corroded without a problem.
Very odd!

Presumably your 'different settings' didn't include ones that gave you a tone for small-ish iron targets? Because although 5p's aren't that large, you should still be able to find them 5 or 6 inches down, I would expect.
And re. the 1p's, even the rusty copper-plated ones usually give enough of a non-ferrous response to trigger a detector. Though how well may depend on your freq. choice.

5p will read very close if not spot on a pull tab 33 VDI on my machine. Non copper pennies read right in the iron range at 8-10 VDIPaulDC wrote:I just found this thread because I had the same problem with my Goldmaxx not picking up a new 5p sitting on the surface on Berrow beach last Tuesday. I’m so glad I come across this thread. I thought my dues was broken and yet I just bought It! So after reading this thread I tested the coins which were giving me problems and can confirm they are magnetic so they are getting rejected. The funny thing is if the coin is far from the coil it will still pick it up as its conductivity will be less so doesn’t get discriminated as bad!
