The BBC weather man says that this coming Sunday is promising reasonable weather, if but a blittle on the cool side. Needing a break from all the Christmas excesses I have decided to wizz down to the coast and perhaps give Talacre a try once more. Anyone seen the lay of the sands at Talacre, Prestatyn, Rhyl, or Kimnel Bay?

I'm tempted to pop the Nel Big coil on the Safari and try out my new Easy Swing bungee (from Santa) and compare it against a poorman's bungee that I purchased from my local B&M store.

With the most recent storm blowing in from the west, I am anticipating that it will "perhaps" have pushed loads of sand up onto the beaches of North East Wales and may even have brought items up out of the Mostyn Deeps and dropped them onto the Talacre sands.

Good Luck mate Hope the storm has revealed much 'bling' necessitating eyes only searching and a much bigger finds bag ..........................but don't hold your breath on the latter

Certainly a big old beast the BIG Nel on a Safari,but would be a deadly combination for deep pasture,that combination would sort the men from the boys.Phenomenally deep i would have thought.

Not sure about BIG Nel on the beach especially the wet sand though ??

The Big Nel/Safari combination manages quite well on the beach but can be a bit of a struggle when it come to the bullet beds. My biggest problem has been the weight and it's effect on the old joints.

I improved matters by rationing my detecting time down to four hours, switched from a spade to a long handled sand scoop, and am now playing around with bungee supports to ease the weight problem.

Rationalising my detecting, I swapped off the CS4PI for a springer air rifle, sold off my EuroAce and it's extra coils, and was looking into getting rid of the Safari. With the renewal of my driving licence coming up in March and not being totally confident of continuing to hold a licence, I bought in a Quest Q40 for it's compactness and ease of transport on bus and train etc. OK, a Daeus would be much more compact but was out of my price range.

Not totally confident in the Q40 yet, I will continue keep hold of the Safari until I know how things are going to pan out.

Sunday will see if the bungees resolve the Safari weight problem for me.

I used my Q40 on the beach for the first time today, it's a bit chirpy for me, I prefer the Ads 250 on the beach i think.

When I tried my Q40 on Talacre sands last year I was still struggling to make sense of the instruction booklet with some of it's missing information but following advice from the Quest forum on here I was able to get along ok. Not initially impressed though!

The machine worked reasonably well on the dry sand and we eked out a couple of long lost coins and some WWII scrap but I kept it away from the areas where I knew there to be heavy infestations of WWII rubbish.

I was much happier with the Q40 on my farm permissions and I feel that it will do far better than my old EuroAce on them. That's not to knock the EuroAce though; it served me well for five years and frequently filled my finds bag with interesting items.

Eventually made it to Talacre yesterday, despite the early morning frost and the bone chilling wind coming off the Dee estuary. Only managed six coppers, ranging from George V to Elizabeth II and a few brass cartridge cases.

Home made bungee turned out to be a complete failure and it was of little or no help with taking the weight of the Safari/Nel Big coil. Switched to the EasySwing bungee after forty five minutes and that worked considerably better after some slight adjustments.

The recent high tides had chopped away sections of the dunes and dragged loads of fresh WWII scrap onto the sands but with careful listening to the Safai I was able to avoid being over worked digging for scrap that was fooling the Safari into showing coin signals.

Having spotted a few areas that may be interesting to swing the Q40 over, I will probably return and give it an other outing in a week or two.

Hi all. I did get out last Sunday for a beach scan, so much sand was missing from some beaches it was hard to choose the best one. Took a chance on one that had not lost very much i even managed to take my wife along with her F44 but the wind was freezing so not sure how long we could stick it, we managed about 2.5 hrs before the wind and tide beat us. Total finds was just over £22 but very worn coins only one new £1 lots of alloy rubbish some bits of sunglasses but no gold or silver, i was using my AT Pro, it was wet to damp sand hardly any finds on the dryer sand, interesting that.
