Golden Earing. No! not the band..

So yesterday when I was out on the dig, I bumped into bob79 from this very forum. Now to cut to the Chase, Bob had with him a 9ct gold loop style ear ring, that could either be open or closed.
I was using my CTX3030 with the 17 inch coil, running in fast, ferrous coin, and auto sensitivity +3.
Now I know that in ground signals are different to air tests, but my CTX never picked up the ear ring when waved across the coil in either open or closed? Although it did show a number on the screen in the closed position, but no sound at all

So what settings do you use for smaller non coin gold items.

Relic mode with the volume gain cranked up to about 22 or so and a slow swing picks small gold up just fine on my CTX. Mind you it loves big gold much better!
