MDF Metal detecting & metal detectors resource: a friendly forum to discuss all your detecting needs and promoting responsible metal detecting for all.
Hello everyone
I got me first metal detector about two weeks ago - it is a Minelab Quattro. Could you please give me some advice what is the best setting to detect on a ploughed field?? And I got a permission to detect on someone else's land, and that person told me that probably there is a very old burial site or a cemetery or something... and that there has been any battle in the past there. What settings would you recommend? Please, I really need help because I am totally confused with my Minelab...

Hi Kasia, try to get your hands on a copy of "Mastering the quattro" by Andy Sabische.
I received a copy with my Safari and find it invaluable, I have read it numerous times and find the tips great when I come across any akward situations. He has recently printed an updated version to cover the Safari as well which I will get as soon as it drops a bit in price or I can get it 2nd hand. Like the Safari it is all about getting used to the variations in the tones and only use the display as a back up.
Best of luck with your new machine.
i use the quattro too, i am not an expert ..
i always get great results ( not perse in finds )
but in the way it operates , stable , smooth and
with an overall comfort when i use it in all metal,
i do not use any kind of discrimination in 90 percent
of my time .. but i run it in manual 17 ( sense )
i barely run it any higher , do not feel the need for it ..
the quattro is a very easy on the go detector, just give it
what it needs wich is a slow swing , and very few air..( go low )
if you got a mid tone , or a high tone , and it is repeatable..
please start to investigate that particular target..
in my toughts the fbs machines , especially the whole explorer
line up of detectors , excell on this .
if you got the rolling sound < even a when it is in one way ..
chances are it is a deep coin ,or coin shaped target..
so all you have to do now is to size your target ..
it needs tosilent silent when you shuffle up one coil, from all corners.
then at last , if you want to be even more secure..
try to size it with the pinpoint button, the buzz needs to be very short .
for this alone i would almost advice headphones.. ( beaches always )
in my quattro time i be able to determine a coin from something else
for let say 61 % .. i could say 90% but that would be bluff.
in time , and that means for me too , i will try to make it a 65 percent and
that would make me really happy.
problem with this is every time i tought i was there ( the 65 ) i was wrong.
so you need to stay humble .
and put some xtra time in it.
the quattro is a great detector , it is not a super machine but worth wile
some extra effort.
