First Deus beach outing.

Post by Easylife »

On a brief trip to the east coast recently I took the Deus along to experience how it reacted on the beach for the first time rather than being too bothered about any finds at all. Some of the beach had been blown inland and then the sea had taken a lot of sand out with it I was told. I just had about an hour on each of two beaches at Mablethorpe and Sutton on sea. Setting the ground balance to beach setting (default 27) and choosing Dry beach mode I started on the drier sand. Targets were very few as expected and the Deus was veryy stable and found four modern coins and a dog tag. Two coins were actually laying on the surface and were a light green colour on the upside whilst the underside was quite normal. I was quite impressed at finding a modern small penny at 12 inches deep.
I left the Deus in Dry beach mode whilst working over to the wetter sand until it started falsing quite a lot so changed it into Wet beach mode which instantly gave the impression of being a bit too overkill, though totally silent it did not inspire confidence. Looking at the program differences between the two, Wet beach mode has a faster reactivity with lower sensitivity than dry beach mode, so I thought somewhere in-between would be better and just lowered the reactivity a bit which in theory should increase depth. I found no targets at all on the wet sand but did chase a few before giving up digging with the scoop at about 15 inches. It is all part of the learning curve of course. On a few occasions there was a good clear tone from the centre of the hole but concluded that this was caused by the mineralization, but if not then I just did not dig deep enough.
I did enjoy my first brief beach outing with the Deus knowing full well that the beaches there will no doubt have been done to death by local detectorists and others since the last season finished, so was pleased to make any finds at all.
I plan to do more beach detecting in future so any further advice relating to the Deus beach settings would be appreciated. Even though only an initial brief beach stint, I felt that a PI machine would have been more beneficial on those seemingly clean beaches.
No pictures as the finds were just not worthy. :D

Seems ok on soft but on wet never seemed to get any great depth or find much prob location not detector fault, when it woz on v3.2 and standard 9" coil .. Just started with hf coil and 74khz on the soft 3x outings. 2nd outing first 18ct ring in 10 yrs of going there in the soft. To b fair a £80 detector ort to of got it. It woź about 3 " down . Going to stick with hf at beach on the soft for a while and see what happens.Settings wise I found the wet setting on v3.2 and Stan coil you didn't get much depth , on the dry I just used standard detecting setting a variation of dues fast. I even thought there must be stuff in the wet got a pi and still found not much more really, tryed the cuts , inbetween lifeguard flags etc. I would say where I go 98 % is found in the soft.

On my first wet sand outing I forgot about the beach GB, no surprise then that it performed badly. On the second outing I set the machine up correctly and it was a joy to use on the wet sand. I have a feeling that a lot depends on the nature of the sand, results seem to vary.
