Cleaning
Hi all,
just a quick question. How do you keep your Deus clean? After a day in the field, there doesn't need to be much dirt on the stems to result in a horrible 'graunchy' noise coming from the clamps when collapsing, and score marks on the paint work.
Do you all have covers or simply live with the score marks? Am I just being a bit precious with my machine?

They told me I’d never be any good at poetry, because I’m dyslexic, but so far I’ve made 3 jugs and a vase.

I don't keep mine clean the scratches are just normal battle scars. When mine is reluctant to slide I just blast the hosepipe down the tubes to rinse the grit out. Mines just a worktool that would hate to be molly coddled with extra covers, the only exception is that the controller does get a plastic bag over it when it rains.

I don't retract the top of the stem, so it doesn't get scratched up. I just never see the need.
If it did get badly scratched up and I was that worried about it, I could buy a shiny new replacement stem section for about £25, so I can't see the point in fitting neoprene covers and adding weight to a machine that prides itself on being the lightest available (with the exception of the ORX).

I think it’s the same with most of us, when it’s new the first scratch is gutting then after awhile you don’t worry. I used to use camo covers and now I need some thing to stop the glare of the bare metal.
I totally agree with easylife and do exactly the same now.

Its called patina, battle scars, wear "n" tear, ratty look, used, well used, very well used, almost shiny there's no paint..... or........ my crikey its so shiny i can see my face in it ......etc etc swing it with pride and look like a seasoned detectorist...lol
I just hose the stem down from time to time, but take the coil cover off and wash the cover and coil if really mucky, almost after every use
Regards Steve

I'm with the non wash/cover brigade. It's a tool to be used battle scars and all.
Use it and enjoy it.

If it worries you then just detect on the one day of the year that the pasture is dry enough not to get it muddy but not enough to make it undiggable
And no ploughed land

At last, someone likeminded. Being an engineer by trade, it’s in my blood to look after my tools. Preventative maintenance extends a tools working life. Cleaning is inspection....

With two high end machines that cost a lot of money I was always tought to look after my gear. Funny enough when I sold my first detector I got top price for it because I had looked after it.
Plus always good to keep the mud out between the coil and coil cover, everyone to their own but I will carry on cleaning

EDIT. PS I even put shower caps on the coils to get them home safely without plopping mud everywhere in the car
