Thanks,
because sometimes it is a bit difficult to ground balance adequately in mineralized soil. One friend used in his very mineralized field the beach mode (not with the Simplex), and said could get god finds, swinging the detector slowly.
Thanks
Christian.
I had a button on the sandy field in beach mode at some sort of depth.
Small hammered will still come in but will be more of a scratchy tone than normal.
I can’t find the post now but someone posted about beach mode on the Simplex. You can apparently override the 3 notched segments on beach mode by selecting park mode and notching it out or something similar??????
Sorry I can’t remember what the advice was, can anyone help?
I'm very new to the Simplex which I got as a backup for my trusty old V3i. So, my first impressions .... It's a chatty little begger and I need to get used to that as all of my other machines in recent years have run very quiet - which I prefer. Using the suggestions in this thread got me started though i always auto ground balance as my fields need nowhere near the preset 90 (actually between 25 and 40 seems to be about right). So far, the rest are :-
Field mode
Sens 5
Disc 0-5
Iron audio 2
F2
Slow sweep
This setup quiets things somewhat and helps a bit to ID big deep iron, and on my second trip out today I got a nice silver watch chain fob (unhallmarked but with a small engraved gold inset) .... and a Henry II hammered penny - my first this season.
I still need to get to grips with this detector, but early indications are good.
Previously, early 80s to early 90s top-end C-Scopes and Tesoros. Early 90s onwards, several Whites "big box" detectors including the wonderful V3i - which is much missed.
I think I may have a solution to the chattering Simplex+ issue....
Like a lot of old hands, my default is to always ground balance my detector as per the manual, even if there is a preset level (as there is with the Simplex+ which is set at 90). Using the coil-pump method, my ground balance comes in between 25 and 40 and I've been using that on the basis that it had to be better than the preset despite the chatter - which I had to reduce to an acceptable level by lowering the sensitivity to a maximum of 5. HOWEVER, I was out today and decided to try with the preset. Instantly, the chatter was gone and I was able to raise sensitivity to 6 and, occasionally, 7.
Given that the ground balance of 90 was apparently "off" for the site I thought I was going to get less depth and/or muddier signals but I was wrong. For a test I buried a hammered penny at various depths of up to 9 inches and checked with both preset and pumped ground balance settings at the highest stable sensitivity in Field and both Park modes. In each case the best signal came using the preset ground.
I really don't understand this. For more than 40 years I've been ground balancing all of my detectors to get best depths and stability but with the Simplex+ it works the other way around and this is so counterintuitive. Can anyone explain why the Simplex+ is SO different?
As an aside, I see a lot of these machines for sale almost brand new and I wonder if it's because dinosaurs like me insist on ground balancing for themselves and then can't live with the chatter? Just a theory .....

I bought a simplex back in February for a detecting trip in Essex and sold it when i got back due to having a really hard time with the ground balancing, having seen all the positive feedback from simplex users i have bought another and am going to learn how to use it properly this time,i dont understand how it works with the preset gb but im willing to see how it works for me this time.
Well, I'm now completely satisfied that leaving the GB at the preset (90) is the way to go - manually balancing just makes for chatteryness. I have no idea why this works as it does but it does! The only downside seems to be unstable VDIs.
Since my last post I've sold my V3i and CS-6 and am 100% committed to the 'plex. My preferred settings are listed below. I've had a handful of hammerds including cut half, a cut quarter and a mega-thin Soldino so I have no doubt about its capabilities.
Mode: Field
Freq: F1
GB: Preset (90)
Sens 6 or 7
Disc: 1-10
Iron Vol: 2
Sweep: Fairly slow

Does anyone know what the reactangular hole is for at the the top of arm rest?
Also it looks something can be clipped and slid on below that?
And a tiny hole? (which I think you can clip your pin pointer lanyard to but that seems stupid!)

You can buy a (3d printed I think) plastic drawer which is designed to slide into the rectangular hole. You can keep your treasure in there, but it's not much bigger than a matchbox! This type of thing:
I think that the features you describe are just side effects of the design process - I don't really think they're meant for anything specific, but there's always someone inventive....

that little hole is for the sand on the beach to slide down your shaft so it gets stuck gaffer tape it up if going to beach
OR slip in a miniature whiskey bottle with tube through the top to suck on after you've just dug up your 20th bottle top for the day.

Best setup I found in trashy areas or any field:-
Mode: Park1
Freq: F2
GB: Preset (90)
Sens 3 or 4
Disc: open
Iron Vol: off
Sweep: medium.
Any dodgy signals then whip iron on and sweep both ways. If its hitting 04 both ways leave in ground.
Don't set the sensitivity above 4 in trashy areas or you'll experience a world of pain.
