Back in the old days as a schoolboy, I had all the time in the world to go out with my simple TR C Scope and it became a sort of extension of my body. Looking back, the finds were remarkable and 1981 was almost a magical year when it seemed there was no limit to what might be discovered. Fast forward a few years and life took over and work, cars and the opposite sex took up every waking hour, and even with supposedly more advanced detectors, the old magic never quite came back, simply due to lack of time and distractions.
I have recently taken to going out with my old 1970s and '80s models and it is like riding a bike, your ears instantly tune in to the hum even though you haven't switched on for 30 or 40 years. They are far more friendly to use than my modern digital wonder and surprisingly find just as much.
Another thing I noticed over the years on the farm is that there are some fields, slopes, etc, where it is enjoyable to work. It is a subconscious mix of warmth, soil, view, slope, etc, whereas other areas just don't seem so inviting. I have found that finds tend to be more numerous in the places I like compared to the less pleasant spots, so presumably previous generations tuned in to the same unconscious signals.

Putting the time in and knowing you're detector is a big factor but luck plays a big part because you have to walk over an object to find it, some people are lucky to live in certain parts of the country.

I’d say it’s 90% luck and 10% knowing your tones. If you don’t walk over the target, then you’ve no chance, and the fact that you walk in that exact spot on a massive field is more luck than judgment. It’s a funny old game 🤣🤣

Some really interesting replies, especially the one about probability which 95% of me agrees with.

We all want to find something interesting, but for me (and I would assume most of us) I try and focus on the moment, the gentle swing of the detector, the slow rhythmic walk, almost just being at one with the land as you move around. I do seem to find more when I'm in this state rather than pacing around the field thinking 'there's nothing here'. Plus it's a much more enjoyable day, even if you don't find anything.

Lunch is always enjoyable. A nice tree trunk and the obligatory 'did you see university challenge last night' to which my buddy gives the required chuckle.
