I think with the Coil being waterproof, they needed to develop a way of charging it as using a mini usb will let in water ::g

Hi Liam, My charging clip broke a few weeks ago (pin fell out) fair play to regtons who replaced it free of charge, but said they will only replace it this time, next time I will have to pay, they did say that there is something new coming out to charge the coil but said it will not help me, whether it is something different on the coil I do not know, it would be good to find out how many clips have broken, it could be proven to be a design fault, which I think it is.

The amount of money they cost us the machine should'nt need a spare.

Yep, it does seem a bit fiddly, and a weak spot in the system, doesn't it???? A mini-usb connector, like on the headphones, & control box wouldn't be waterproof, so thats out........ I dont see why they cant make a contact-free, inductively coupled charge system, its fairly cheap, and easy, and the coil would be waterproof, {bit like the rechargable toothbrushes, if you get what I mean...}

Cheers all, Fred

.

I've treated my charging clip with kidgloves since I got it as I knew they were flaky and needed care, but it still went faulty today. The pins were moving side to side, so I decided to open it up and see what was inside. Very basic indeed!

Well... don't bother being careful with yours folks, just enjoy it while it lasts. Looks as if it's almost designed to fail on it's own! The pins are soldered to a little pcb as you can see in the picture, but the copper that the solder and pin are connected to corrodes from underneath the solder joint, and therefore it's guaranteed to fail at some point in time from even the gentlest of nudges. What a crap design.

Had to make up an improvised (improved :-/ ;)) ) charger because of this. =)) For future reference, the positive terminal is the one towards the outside of the coil, and negative is obviously on the inside area.

Bought a 3D printer last week so will be knocking up some prototypes of some improved clips at some point. ::g Might have to send the folks at XP some samples. =))

Speaking as an engineer, that is really poor. XP should have the experience now to design a machine that is robust, and tolerant of mud, water, sand, rough handling, and all the other things an outdoor piece of kit has to take.

My coil clip broke last week :E. One of the prongs fell out I tried to put it back in with some tweezers but it pinged out of my tweezers into the carpet somewhere. I cannot believe how shoddy this clip is. Being a woman I have fairy fingers and treated it with great care. :D
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

This is another thread on the subject:
http://www.metaldetectingforum.co.uk/vi ... 39&t=56258

The electrical aspect of the charging clip is very straightforwards: it is just a mini-USB socket, and the two-pin spring probe. The Zero and 5 volts that are on all USB cables / connectors are joined directly to the probes. That's it. It wouldn't be overly complex to manufacture a lookalike board, but with the pin assembly made more rigid...hmm, thinks...

LOL!! The Déus in GMP mode will find where you lost it in the carpet :D

Mine failed a while ago but it was the actual plastic that acts as a soring that fractured.
I managed to secure it to the coil with a rat-tail clip but the pins failed soon after :(
