I'm confused here...Is he plowing the field or metal detecting?

Not exactly plowing............More like,hoovering up all goodies,befor me.Has a knack of walking
over the best spots,as has his other half, ive tried Walking backwards, praying to the gods,
dowsing, and closing my eyes (but keep tripping over) so think my only hope is get a bigger coil.
Well worth the dosh just ta see the look on his face, when i produce the goods,he missed. <:-P =))

firstly i Noticed when he searched with the small coil he did not scrape the ground like he did with the bigger coil,he was 1 or 2ins off the ground.
Secondly when he scraped the soil for the first time he did not go over the hole with the smaller coil and i wonder if it would have detected it then.
So your probably only getting about another 4 or 5 ins extra depth with the bigger coil,so it aint worth the extra £350 i reckon.

Gaz. I dont think youd get four or five extra inches......perhaps three, though youll get better ground coverage, but not sure how good the pin-pointing is,compared to the smaller head, which is
pretty good.Even at £350 im tempted, but only if i can get some new farms to detect,as only getting out once a week at the mo,on club sites.

if it is 3ins more depth with the bigger coil no wonder they did not check the hole after the first scrape with the standard coil, those little froggy fibbers. :))
i would only get another coil if it was at least another 6ins deeper.

Detection depth of a coil varies approximately with the square-root of the coil size, this is based on mathematics. Example: going from an 8 inch to an 11.5 inch would increase depth by square-root of (11.5/8) which is 1.20, ie. a 20% increase, say from 8 inches to 9.6 inches.
This explains why enormous coils dont seem to deliver what you'd expect, and smaller 'Sniper' coils seem to still go surprisingly deep.
Other confusing factors include:
Build quality may be better (eg. better electrical screening, more rigid mechanical construction) which may allow higher detector gain without falseing.
The detectors circuitry may be optimised for the stock coil, changing to a different one may mean they become 'mismatched', losing performance.
A big coil picks up more ground signal as well as more target signal, and the detector may not be able to give much improvement for this reason.
The coil designs may not be the same - eg changing from a DD with curved central sections to one with 'straighter' sections means different characteristics.

Gaining large depth increases is very difficult - the target signal fades away very rapidly with depth.
Hope this helps.

Hi Hammyman. Any update on how well your large coil works,on Depth, probs pinpointing, items found with better sweep size, does the larger head give armache....or still quite light.

ATB Howard

Ps ive gone on the list,an sod the expense, but will allow 2 other deus users i know to use it,
and hopefully in exchange theyll invite me to have a go on thier fields....sometimes :D

The new coil doesnt really suit the Deus stem(it unbalances it)It is fine on a straight shaft.
It is just as sensitive as the small coil!!It will still pick up tiny targets. It is deeper, but you wont be getting hammy pennies at 18 inches :D It pinpoints slightly to the right of the front ,if you pull the coil back until the signal goes.It is heavier and you do notice the weight after a long day(It is still no where near ML heavy)I like it and think its money well spent ;) I have a new lot of settings to try out, specifically for the big coil on pasture.People have been able to run it on sens 99 with fantastic depth results!I will let you know how it performs. :D
By the way, there is a big coil on Ebay at the moment. ;)

Any news on the coil setting tests.?

I have bought a gpx5000 just to get extra depth but it's really doing my head in!
