Incidentally the major finds were from the 70s and 80s and we're very deep .Way out of detector range ..
I entirely agree on the bits of foreshore where there is almost solid iron, for example rivets from barge breaking. However, on the patches of shingle, sand and clay a detector can be great fun to use. Modern detectors with a very quick recovery time and tone discrimination allow experienced user to do some interesting tricks. Just wish that they had been around 30 years or more ago!
