thanks mrix i didnt realise this at all i often turn the machine on right next to the car or if im in the field i normally power up and the coil is touching the ground wat an idiot lets see if this makes a diffrence
I think countless people never had a second thought regarding the switching on side of things including me as it was not stated in the manual how long the actual calibration could take.

Cheers

Being a brand new Deus user (and being thick as two short planks), i still find the above a bit confusing.

Are you saying point the coil to the sky, turn on control box, turn on headphones, do the NO/Yes thing and then wait for it to calibrate..... then return coil to the ground to alter programes, sens, disc..etc.

Hi janner53, yes its all about waiting on the Deus to fully calibrate and during that time making sure the deus is clearly away from any metal objects, hence the safer option of pointing to the sky etc, return to the ground and find a clear area to ground balance ::g

Also...sorry about this :D ,,, connecting the control box onto the stem. The new deus control box slides onto the stem and locks, I believe the older ones were magnetic. Now the box slides on lovely but I'm finding it a booger to slide it off. The instructions show a thumb on the bottom pushing it up, with mine it nearly breaks my thumb and i have to use my other hand to help it off and it comes off with a jerk. Are they all like this or am I missing a simple method of getting it off.

Fusion wrote:All coils will pick up noticeably more electrical interference if they are not held completely flat, so it is wise to hold them that way during the important self-cal period. By 'flat', I mean how you would normally hold them when searching.
And the "15 inches away from metal" should really be taken to read "15 inches from the ground". Depending on the size of the metal, you might need to be many feet away. For example, don't stand 6 feet / 2 metres away from your car when you turn it on.
My own experiments show that the ground can be picked up more than 15 inches away with a typical "9 inch" search-coil, so I would try and hold the coil 2 feet / 60cm clear of the ground, just ensure the coil stays flat, don't tip the whole detector.
I've never even considered the effect of the coil orientation. Many thanks for the heads up. ::g

Hi I take it that if you don't follow this procedure then this will just affect the calibration ( it doesn't damage the detector. having only just bought mine and being a little thick ive done none of these things while I've been familiarising myself with it hope I havnt damaged it. after reading this I will do it correct in future thanks for your info. ::g

Hi kev, that`s correct, if you do not follow the procedure it could mess with the calibration, will certainly not damage your Deus.

I don't own a Deus :D :D :D :D

Seem quite straight forward in the first couple of post.

Expected loads of comments like "thank you for the information" or "I didn't know that"

Not lets see how complicated we can make this.

Well, its over 3 years since mrix made this topic and I wonder how many new Deus owners are out there now and most likely not allowing the machine to start off on the right foot?
I have now read all of the posts again and its little crucial tips here and there that can make a huge difference to your finds rate. Good input from John (danzigman) and fusion as expected. ::g
Good luck to you all! Liam :;@
