Thanks Steve, great reply. I suppose what I was trying to say is that you don't HAVE to go out and buy new coils and the latest add-ons to enjoy detecting. The prices are horrendous and detecting has up to recent times been a fairly inexpensive "hobby for everyone" I see people whispering covertly to each other out on the fields about their special secret settings and they spend more time in hushed chatter than actual detecting. Their detecting style is all over the place, though they will still have some good finds in their pockets to show others over a cuppa and burger an hour later :D
So, good luck to all, whether you have the basics or the latest, it really makes little difference to your finds rate if you already know how to use what you have.
As you say, get to know what you have before trying to understand the next wave of technologies.
The brain likes uncomplicated information to process. Once it learns the subtle differences in the tones across a wide range of targets then it will not let you down and you will instantly know when to stop swinging and check out a signal. I know many Deus users who moved on to upgrades and ended up not finding much as the tones had changed a little, maybe more crisp and quicker but they had altered and they had to start all over again. I have also tried upgrades but went back to V2. Each to his own and I agree that we have to have the latest technologies out there to advance the science of detecting.
We all have good days and not so good days and I think some new members will read these topics and assume that their low finds rate is down to not having the very latest technologies.
If I won the lotto then I may have a different opinion of course!
Happy hunting everyone, lets hope rain soon appears, shares in pickaxes and sledge hammers must be sky high right now .. Liam :;@
PS - Yes I also prefer Windows XP version and installed that instead on the latest laptop.
PS - I have gone off-topic here, so I will stop posting, I am like the Anti-Christ of advanced technologies! rl;

Agree with everything you said and edited out some to leave the key message (hope you don't mind) and not off topic, its relevant to the whole picture.

Some will disagree, thats peoples right to do so, and with my opinion also

Was it Voltaire that said...." i may not agree with what you said but i will defend to the death your right to say it"

Regards Steve

Common Sense is not so common!
How often do we advise others to "Slow Down" when detecting, yet we forget to do that ourselves all too often.
The new coils and the new software will undoubtedly enhance performance, but mostly only on those tones that are there already? If we are not understanding those signals in the first place, then having them enhanced will not register in the brain. There are those who DO know their machines 100% and so they will benefit fully from new technologies. People value added depth too much, if you cannot understand whats happening in the top 9 ins then its not much use reaching down to 12 ins rl;
My old Deus is showing signs of old age, so eventually I will need to upgrade and may end up with something more advanced, perhaps a 9.5 inch coil .. =)) Liam

Good common sense spoken. Sounds right to me. I’m still trying to understand the top two inches of soil😀
