My ISP is AOL and I can only think that The C.E. have a block on them after AOLs recent hacking problems.
I was already on the verge of changing after 16 years with them so my order is already in.
The bottom line is if you can't get a response from the C.E. try another email address from a different ISP/

I am with AOL and have been unable to get a permit, which I assume is because of AOL. Last year I had it instantly. I re-applied from my gmail account and recieved it within seconds. Thanks for the help Rodi££ian as not being able to get a permit was really starting to pickle my onion. Thanks again

As anyone and their dog can get one in a matter of seconds, I assume the real purpose of it is to ensure that the C.E. can get their hands on any interesting finds.

Hello All,

For anyone who lives on the south coast I have obtained a map outlining SSSI sites, I do have a permit for the crown estate foreshore but found that regardless of the areas they may own there were many SSSI sites around me:

Strange but true, but just before coming on the forum tonight I re-done the application for the permit as the first one never worked
And this thread was right in front of me
So I will now have to email them and hopefully I will get one

When I clicked on the metal detecting permit application link on The Crown Estate website there was a delay of about 30 seconds in displaying the metal detecting permit application form. Once I completed the mandatory fields and pressed "go" I received an email almost immediately.

As such, you are not required to obtain a permit but must read our terms and conditions (see link below) before conducting any metal detecting on Crown Estate foreshore."

Are folks mixing up the Crown Estates Foreshore and the Thames PLA foreshore? My understanding is for the first you don't need a permit but for the second you do.

I met some folks on the Thames PLA foreshore who hadn't bothered with a permit and I don't know who or how it will enforced, but I can imagine the possibility of confiscating detectors.

Crown Estate beaches no longer require a printed Paper permit. More info here:

From the same site, there is a jointly managed permit system for the River Thames only. that is managed between the CE & Port of London Authority (PLA)

Anyone wishing to go metal detecting on Crown Estate foreshore will require a permit.

The Crown Estate generally seeks to encourage access over, and responsible use of, the foreshore and as a result our consent for non-commercial metal detecting on the foreshore will not incur a charge. Foreshore in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is defined as the land between mean high water and mean low water. In Scotland the definition is between mean high water of spring tides and mean low water of spring tides
