Good morning all.... hope everyone is well ?
This may sound like a really dumb question... but we took a family walk yesterday along Ferring Beach in Sussex (had 2 kids and 4 dogs with us so no metal detector) and I wondered what the best "line" or area is on a beach to detect ?
I've seen plenty of enthusiasts on Worthing Beach down on the sand around the rock pools at low tide but where is the best place to detect on a beach (I guess it depends on what you're hoping to find) ?

does depend a lot and I dont know that beach
recent losses will be where they were dropped
beach condition change is there hard pack and so on
It takes time to find any hot spots and I doubt anyone will tell you exactly where they are
New beaches I look for little dips, gullies, where it feels firmer under foot and so on. Walk a bit random then grid areas where I find fishing weights or sandy beaches where the pebbles stay on the top.

As a general rule I’d say more loose change up on the dry sand where people sit and it drops out their pockets .Heavier items such as jewellery more towards the low tide line . This is a very rough guide and I’ve found gold on the dry sand as well as wet . Same with coins .

Hi, if your beaches have lido's its always worth a scrounge around especially if the local council have recently dredged it and dumped it around the walls!
Tip from a mate of my wife who detects alot on beaches.

As I'm only searching on beaches, here are my thoughts:

At the bottom of that picture - recent loses, so best finds are after sunny weekends, preferably Sundays evening as Monday can be too late
95% finds will be bottle tops, light aluminium blobs, aluminium foil and wrappers, tins etc. Mid parts are the ones I had the oldest finds although there is still a bit of older rubbish nails, screws, unknown furniture/machinery/boat parts and depending on where you search, in Kent there is plenty of ww2 cartridges, projectiles, shrapnel, fishing weights and sometimes unexploded items so be aware, but that's where I found some 1880-1970 coins as well. Deeper muds.. not much finds but they tend to be in better quality - .303 cartridges, projectiles etc.
I think the question should be not where on the beach but on which beach? These ones that were popular in the past rather than now or the ones that were never popular.. as well as when, so after the storm or.. secret places that nobody will share (yet to discover for me!).
Also, good places tend to be these ones:

As lots of older items get washed up.. apparently so
