Detecting a pond
Hi all,i have a pond I think that’s what you would call it on my permission. In between two fields sided by trees, it’s not that wide but quite long. I am guessing it has always been there and probably was bigger many many years ago. The grass on my permission is getting too long again so I was thinking of having a poke around the bank & shallows. I recently got a 6” coil for my Ctx & I’ve got my wellies , any tips I think there has to be some coins & things in there right??

Hi, just go for it! Recovery may be difficult unless you have a sand scoop?
Also, wear waterproof gloves and clean up well afterwards, bound to be all sorts of nasty things in the water.

At the risk of sounding a tad dull I would add to this, "be careful"
I have two ponds on my main permission and tend to keep away from them, as the banks are slippy and I suspect the bottoms of them to be soft mud.
Perhaps take a friend if you plan to get in it?

Test the depth with a stick .. add some .. and wear waders ... plus a waterproof detector, and suggest taking someone with you.

Most of the ones that I've tried seem to contain several centuries worth of junk. Also look out for munitions, ponds were a standard way of disposing of things that go bang. ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

If going alone would ensure someone knows when you expect to return - ponds and lakes like to swallow humans !!. I would also suggest a self inflating lifejacket in case of falls just in case you knock yourself out or render yourself immobile during a fall into the water.

I'm always a bit wary of waders. The fishing bailiff on the estate next door was poking about in the river with his waders on and the water went over the top so they filled with water. He nearly came a cropper as they were so heavy that he had trouble getting out of the water.

I've detected my pond for a bit of fun & it's not easy. You get a good signal & then the fun starts pin pointing it & then wafting the sludge away & trying to fumble about finding the target
Mine's sludge on limestone so I know I'm not going to disappear, leaving my hat floating on the surface !

Rolling about naked in mud will give the wrong impression.

I’ll be sure to investigate the depth first Andive had a look at waders on eBay to see what’s availableRed Fred wrote: Wed Sep 15, 2021 3:50 pm I'm always a bit wary of waders.
