Crotal bell and it's a ringer!

Post by Macsen Wledig »

Only my second full crotal and unlike the first I found this one still rings
I found it very close to the farmhouse which has a 1753 date stone along with quite a few vickys including a decent 1846 shilling. Though a decorated spindle whorl came up too which may mean there was an earlier building here.
I'm just wondering whether the crotal would pre date the farmhouse or if its contempory.

Looks to be 18th century in date so contemporary with building [81/]

thought as much pal but nice to have it confirmed. It's a new permission deep into rural Bowland. The permission includes about a quarter of a mile of Roman road as it begins to rise up towards the moors and when the farmer said as far as he knows no one has metal detected up there, I thought I was in business. He even told me a story passed down about a battle that was once fought up there and so I thought I might be in the hunt. 6 hours later my soul was destroyed. Credit to the farmer I've been in few fields as clean as that. Even iron grunts where a rarity.
I'd studied the lidar intently and knew exactly where the Roman line was but it was just absolutely desolate. Demoralisingly so after such initial high hopes.

Returning to my car down at the farmhouse and not wanting to drive home so empty handed I decided to try near the farmhouse and was really glad I did. I was only there just over an hour until bad light stopped play but as I say, silver shilling, Musket balls, quite a few coppers the oldest being a George I penny.
That decorated spindle whorl though. Now I know a random spindle whorl doesnt necessarily mean the area was occupied contempory to the find but this is in such a rural area that it does certainly suggest an earlier origin than 1753.
Only one sure way to find out though so watch this space.
I'll be back there by weekend [81/]

Nice find Macsen 👍🏻
I love finding these…one of my favourite things to find as well. Last few years I’ve found more complete crotal bells than I have hammies 🤣.
