they run from around the 13th century onwards i think. Mainly used by land owners farmers etc to pay the workers which could then be exchanged for bread chickens grain etc as far as i know.

Would you have to spend the lead tokens at the farm where you had been working?

as far as I'm aware yes. Like the farms or landowners today who control alot of land and even villages. Would be interesting if anyone could add to it.

thanks rob. Its also nice when the finds tie in with the your home town. I dug a big medal sized coin up last year out of thick black mud on the beach and it was commemorating the opening of the second part of our town in 1862. And has the original town emblem on it, a duck a tall ship and a stag. Now the emblem is just a stag on water. The towns name hartlepool meaning hart=stag lepool=by the sea. Originally it was a forest of stags on the coast so its nice to know the history.

Hi Tomo
Nice finds there. Have to say though that your posts are also a bit depressing for me when I'm still pulling out nothing but rubbish on the exact same beach.I've only found 2 coins to date. Both modern and in a bad state. What machine are you using and how long do you stay out to get this much stuff ?
