what do you do in winter

Post by The Fox »

hi , I can only detect beaches (farmers fields around here are not available ) as this is my first year detecting,and the summer is almost over, what do other beach detectorists do in the winter months?.Do you go out on the beach regular ?, is there anything to find?,or do you only go out after rough weather has churned the sand up .Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Winter is a often better than Summer on the beaches,as was said in the last post. I swapped detectors with someone in Bude or Bideford a few years ago and when I went to his house he had a display cabinet full of rings found on the local beaches after storms. Unfortunately I live as far from the sea as it's possible to get in Britain, so only get to beach detect in the Summer

farmers fields are always available ... but not if you just do cold calling, send letters, and do telephone calls... Approach the farmer with the right tactics and doors will open... but ask for something for nothing .... then its a tough one.

I have seen more gold and silver than a jewellers window all found on North Wales beaches. So get out there when you can. :D
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

Hi Fox, last year was my first back into detecting, I also only do the dry sand beach due to the detector I have, Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. Last year I packed in at the end of September once the tourists had gone and the finds were less than a pound.
Started in June this year, still on the dry sand and have been out at least twice as many times. The finds have been a lot more as I understand the detector a lot better, still only coins but the objective is to get enough to buy the Garrett Ace 250, I am well on the way to that. This year once September has gone will be going onto the wet sand with a C.Scope CS4PI I bought earlier in the year to find more hopefully pre decimal and more decimal.
Once I have got the Ace 250 will try to get somewhere inland as I would really like to find historical items but would still also do the beach for a cash flow.
Cheers,
Dave ::g

Glenfiddich wrote:Hi The Fox ::g personally I'd say that winter time is often a better time to detect on dry land than the summertime is and not wanting to start a war here in my mind detecting a farmers field is always going to be more desirable than detecting on a beach ::g because sure you can find gold and silver rings on the beach and the odd pound coin or two which is good for paying the parking meter ;)) but if you wanted to search for real history like hammered or Roman coins then the beach might NOT be your first choice :-O that said......I have heard on occasions.....very rare occasions about people finding such coins on the beach :-O but generally speaking such coins are more likely to come out of a farmers field rather than the local beach ::g so if I were in your boots, I'd start chapping some doors round about now and see if anyone will give you a chance to detect on their land this coming winter ::g

wish you all the best of luck mate...

Hi Glen, In the main I agree with all you say but now and then depending on the areas history the odd goody does come up as you say. 2nd Cent headstud brooch from Scarborough beach last year.
