Beach detecting
Ok I need to gain some info and where else but here would you get some answer.... Beach Detecting, if you detect on the beach you need a permit yes!!.but what about the beaches that the crown don't own ? Are we able to detect or do we need to ask permission and from whom, and I believe the crown owns the land between the high tide mark and the low, so if there is a third party owner, are we still able to search. The tide marks ??

Hi, beaches are exactly the same as land, it is all owned by someone, so yes you need permission to search any beach. Private beaches are usually sign posted with the name of the owner, its up to the detectorist to track them down & obtain permission. In the case of thirds parties, you would need permission from all parties to gain permission to detect

History is never black & white, just shades of grey
Here in North Devon a lot of the beaches are privately owned so you have to find out the owner (address on beach notice board) and apply, although a lot of people don't bother, including Croyde which is an sssi ,so they get metal detecting a bad name and then moan when we get banned!

Thanks for the info... Is there a directory or something where we can get the owners of a certain beach,
Being mew to detecting, I understand the crown owns parts and shows this on a map at the site, but cant find nothing regarding beach owners, If it was not marked up as private then are we able to detect on there. or can we assume the council own the rights, ?? I might seem a bit dim with this but just need clarification

Hi Morgan, I have been a beach detectorist for about 24 years and no one has ever asked to see my Crown Estate Foreshore Permit and yes I do have one.
On the beaches I search the local councils have authority above mean high water and they are all OK with detecting on the beaches but you have no chance getting permission for detecting land they own, many local authority owned beaches have similar relaxed policies on beaches.
The problems only really occur with privately owned beaches but I think that you will only come across a few in Wales and they only cover small areas of coast. It may be an idea to give us an idea of the areas you want to detect in an see if anyone local can give you any information.
To start you off I have detected on many beaches on the Lynn Peninsular and down to Barmouth with no problems and only come across one very small beach that would be a no go area.

I live in Wigan and even though we have a pier there are no beaches so it was never an issue B-)
However, whilst on holiday in Devon this year, I wanted to detect on the beaches between Torquay and Brixham, most of which are not covered by the Crown Permit. A quick google search put me in contact with Torbay council who were very prompt in replying to my emails and granting permission to detect on their beaches
