Strange goings on at the beach.

Post by Resurgam »

I managed to eventually get down to Talacre on Sunday and had a chat with Brassie and his wife. Towards the end of the day we parted and began to make our separate ways off the beach.

Slowly heading for the exit to the car-park I dug the occasional target that turned out to be nothing more than WWII scrap. Investigating an area that looked as though an other detectorist had been digging, I then stepped firmly on the sand to move on and to my surprise there was a dull report beneath the sand and it fealt as though the sand was going to drop into a cavity beneath my foot. It sounded like a muffled shotgun report, or a rapid roof fall in a mine. "Thump!" I know it wasn't a land-mine; I still have all my toes, but I got to wondering if could be old mine shafts collapsing in the area.

Anyone ever come across the like? :-/

Could be a corrugated piece of metal under the sand or a plastic bottle that gave way with your weight on it , but as Glen said it is better to report it to the authorities , just for piece of mind ::g

Had a nice chat with a lovely young lady in the Coast Guard office this morning and gave her as much information as possible concerning the strange incident at Talacre on Sunday.

The local council often bury dead sea creatures in the beach at Talacre and I have been wondering if one of those had popped it's guts deep beneath the sand. There was no smell of putrefaction though.
All a bit of a mystery. 8-|

The only thing I could add would be I would avoid that particular location and report!

Thanks Leslie; already reported. Coast Guard say they will follow up on my report and may get back in touch at some later date. Interestingly, I already avoid an area where it is known for quick sand to periodically form from time to time.

The first year we had out caravan ( trailer ) down there, a young guy got stuck up-to his waist in the quick sand. Took a whole lot of people from the emergency services to get him out of there. An other year, a whole team of sea anglers got stuck in fog at low water and couldn't find their way off the beach. Not a compass between them!

Stay safe, stay well, and happy hunting.
