Pre decimal from the beach

Post by Stillburning »

Went away for the weekend and had an early start Saturday to hit the beach before it got busy.

Had a reasonable session in the dry sand with some spends, toy cars, cutlery etc. As I worked down onto the wet sand I crossed a stony patch that had been washed out down to the hard pack layer, and was full of coins, some of which were poking out on the top. I finished off the session there and went back over the same small area this morning.

I could see some pre decimal were coming up but it wasnt until I got home and gave everyting a clean I realised how many there were.

Main picture shows all the coins, top row Victoria 4d, George V 2 shillings, 2 6d, 3d, George VI shilling, 2 3d, 2 6d, second row Elizabeth II 2 shillings, 2 3d, 5 6d, 1/2 d, 3rd row unidentified pre decimal and decimals under that.

The close ups are of the Victoria 4d and one of the george V 6d which has come up in amazingly good condition.

This area is very close to the top of a well detected beach so I must have come at a good time, hoping to go back again next weekend and take the 9" coil with me as sure there would have been more if I could have got down between the rocks.

Thanks for looking ::g

Well done on giving that area a good search and coming up with those great finds, keep an eye out for the surrounding area thinning out as there will be Gold there somewhere ::g It is a long time since I had a productive patch like that :-L

That`s a good selection of finds there,well saved ::g Your patch I suspect is a `glory hole`and would be well worth checking again after a storm.I know a few areas on my nearby beaches that still turn up pre-decimals given the right conditions.I would suggest that the Victorian coin on the left of your George V 6d is actually a shilling as it is larger, and the reverse is a crown over a wreath.The 4d (groat) would have Britannia on the reverse and would be smaller than the sixpence.The date looks to be 1872 and if so would have a die number.The mint used these I believe to see how long a die would last before having to be replaced.If yours is clear enough the die number can be found above the date between the 8 and 7. Also the 6d on the right of your 1921 specimen looks to be a sterling silver one (pre 1920) - they tend to turn a grey colour after being in the sea for a long time.

Well found, nice selection of coins. Only found one pre decimal, that was a 1967 penny in sand that had been dredged up for beach replenishment.
Well Done ::g

Thanks for the comments, especially Expat Aussie ::g

The Victorian coin is indeed a shilling, I have no idea when I decided it was a 4d :-/

It is 1872 but unfortunately I cant make out the die number, the other 6d is as you thought pre 1920 - 1915 ::g

Thought I`d post this one up to show the die number.It`s not one of my detecting finds,actually I swapped it off my Mother many years ago after she received it amongst her shopping change.Not the best of pictures but the die number (24) is still clearly visible.
