Thanks for that, a good read. As an Deus user l have thought about these coils but was not sure as all my sites are pasture.

Just go for it Rob, the days of the single frequency black coils are numbered.
No more sending off a coil for replacement batteries to be fitted.
I chose the 9"circular coil for my mainly pasture fields and its just fine.
I have a club m8 who purchased the elliptical at the same time, but he switched to the 9" circular.
Have fun with your new coil.
Jerry.

Mine are too, I guess if there is evidence that any form of Medieval trading took place at all, then maybe worthwhile. But if not then may as well stick with the LF coil or at least wait until you find a hammered on there first. I will no doubt get one sometime as I occasionally get onto sites of Roman finds.roamingrob wrote: Sun Dec 31, 2017 8:32 am As a Deus user l have thought about these coils but was not sure as all my sites are pasture.![]()

Why?, Does it depend on the type of ground you mainly search? I notice that many who got both types prefer the elliptical coil to the round.JBM wrote: Sun Dec 31, 2017 9:03 am I have a club m8 who purchased the elliptical at the same time, but he switched to the 9" circular.
Jerry.
Is the round better for general searching of pasture and cultivated ground and the elliptical better for iron infested and Roman sites?
The circular one is bigger hence more land coverage per swing. The elliptical is much smaller so better between rows of heavy stubble, such as maize, and other tight spots. And for very heavily iron contaminated Roman sites the smaller the coil the better the chance of finding the good finds amongst the background noiseEasylife wrote: Sun Dec 31, 2017 9:21 amWhy?, Does it depend on the type of ground you mainly search? "and listen for the lifted tones of the signal. most often, it will not appear as a full high squeak, it will be subdued but yet raised tone from being pulled down with the iron but the audio will have a lifted rise in the tone over the normal iron tones."
This describes perfectly the scenario of how I found the Gold Tudor ring. A slight rise in tone amongst a bed of nails and other iron. Same set up with full tones, although I had the reactivity ramped up to 4, which made a real difference on that patch.
I'm trying to justify the cost of an hf elliptical coil, so I can go back over old ground and see what else might be there...
Cheers, Ollie.

Forging ahead with my trustee Deus!

Bumping this thread as I’ve been asked about the settings I use for my HF coils a couple of times recently. They are above

I also use the elliptical coil more often than not.
Finding lots of tiny trash more than with the black coils, but also some nice stuff (platinum and gold rings on the beach of the Baltic sea in one session, and just yesterday evening more than 10 coins from an 14th century (assuming) hammered treasure popped up, distributed by the plough over a larger area.
Best greetings from Germany

It seems kind of a bit strange to see old posts revived, but that's okay of course. I see my questions are here from over 1 1/2 years ago in my Deus days just before I bought the 9” HF round coil but I didn't add my thoughts of it here. Well, I liked it a lot, it was very stable and hit most targets really hard due to the higher frequency (28khz was my preferred option) – but being relatively small ground coverage was not so good - still loads of fun to use though. The X35 coils seem quite a good option (I never had one) and also offer the 28khz frequency but in a larger coil which is better for ground coverage when hammy hunting in general I would guess.
Personally I now prefer to hunt using both high and low frequencies simultaneously with a large coil to get the best of both worlds which XP have not yet provided.
