Just ignore him. No beach is anyones private detecting territory.

I have had similar encounters over the years though the last one was a bit more of an issue.

Whilst on holiday a local had a moan at me about being on his beach and i was polite until he got very verbal calling me all sorts of names to which i returned the comment that if he thought i was a nutter then he certainly was. All changed and he pulled a knife and with the blade in his hand he pointed the butt at me saying " do you want some of this". So i walked off and left him to it.

Dangerous man who should have been reported to the police, but i was leaving on the ferry the next morning and had no wish to spend the night giving a statement and so on.

..that's nothing, when I was a lad they drove tanks in over access to oil fields, we had to leave the country and my friends ended up hostage...and no one seems to have made up but instead appear to keep going for more.
