It's a simply matter of different materials (including fingers) expanding & contracting at different rates. Don't they teach stuff like that in schools these days?

Its the same reason why rings are often lost when winter gardening. I found a nice gold ring yesterday, waiting under a huge tree to take shelter from the bloody rain. I thought that if I was taking shelter, many more people would have done the same thing in the past, so did some searching where I stood. The very first bleep was the large heavy ring, about 5 inches down. I was already soaked through by then, so made my way back to the car, first time I had ever had just one signal when out searching and then found a gold ring!
I dont wear any rings as I used to be a sheetmetal worker and then an RAF mechanic and wearing rings was unhealthy as they could get caught all over the place and you lost a finger.
However, next time it is cold, feel how loose that ring is on your finger. On top of that the skin is less sensitive and does not feel the ring slipping off.

when people put sun tan cream on it makes the fingers very slippery and when they get hot on the beach and then go to cool off in the sea they lose the rings for us to find they also come off when they throw balls etc. topcat
