I think the issue may be that gold can often register in some of these low numbers so it's always a bit of a risk ignoring based on numbers alone. The tone does tend to be subtly different between gold and iron though (or at least that's what I have found playing around burying gold rings and lumps of iron in the back garden). A lot depends on shape, size and depth as well - that's where the skill and familiarity with your machine comes in.

there's no simple answer as target ID changes depending on lots of parameters
for example a small copper/Nickle that's normally around the 40s can drop to 10-20 when next to a nail
So can thin lead or small gold drop that low. Don't know never tried. I would expect so. I have never tested as the fields around here are full of those square bent nails which normally come in around the same area.
You can never cover the ground 100% its not worth worrying about. Just something for the next detectorist
you can always work in all metal mode. Which is useful if the field are quite. Or is already detected to death. But normally isn't too efficient time wise.

On my Deus anything up to 6 has always been iron, also anything up in the 90's is invariably rusty iron although if it's a clean signal in the 90's there's a chance it's silver. Just my experience.

As above
but in my opinion trust your ears more than the TID numbers - if it's a clear two-way signal that doesn't blow your ears off (particularly if it gives a good pattern on the XY screen), then it's worth digging...

Yes trust your ears, I had a signal at 97 but it just sounded so clean and pure it had to be investigated, just as well as it was a silver flatware fork weighing 49 grams.pengles wrote: Thu Jan 09, 2020 6:51 pm On my Deus anything up to 6 has always been iron, also anything up in the 90's is invariably rusty iron although if it's a clean signal in the 90's there's a chance it's silver. i was worried because the tones were not an iron grunt to match the low numbers but higher in tone

Last year I found a lovely gold posy ring that was showing 22 on the display. The XY graph was just about vertical, just a smigen off to the right so I dug it. Glad I did. First thoughts were obvious : coke. But no.

The medieval token I spoke of was pewter or lead and was shown in a earlier post today
i did some tests on wads of pure gold leaf and they are very low around 31 32 mark and the XY screen was vertical

Yes
But very rare.
If it sounds good then dig it
Found a hammy yesterday with a screen indicating iron on the XY screen (no numbers) but a sweet, if quiet, ‘dig me’ signal. The TID, the XY screen and the sounds are three separate pieces of info that you put together to make a decision to dig. The audio always trumps everything else though
