Take even more care at Talacre

Post by Resurgam »

I eventually made it down to Talacre yesterday, only to find that the storms and tides had both pushed and pulled sand all over the beach and covered those areas that I had wished to detect with a good thickness of extra sand.

I eventually retreated to the base of the dunes and detected my way westward. I put the Safari into all metals and working by audio and numbers tried to avoid too much WWII shrapnel and scrap.

Once the tide had turned, at lunch time, and I could get back onto the beach I turned and started working my way back eastward. I was trying to recover one target, close to the base of the dunes, when a large section of sand slipped and reburied it.

Unfortunately, the tides and storms have removed large volumes of sand from the base of the big dunes and there are vast, vertical, cliffs of heavy sand just waiting to come sliding down onto any unwary individual that happens to be there when they do slip.

The large dunes at Talacre look to be dangerously unstable!

Please take the upmost care and remember that our Crown Permits do not allow for detecting above the mean high tide linen, or below the mean low tide line.

Hi Chris,

I would imagine the patches of soft mud/quick sand will have also have changed as well..

I've fished Talacre quiet a bit, but not taken my detector there as yet..

What would you say the main attraction of detecting is there? Is there any chance of some historical finds or is it mostly modern stuff that turns up?

Hi Pete,

Talacre?????

Plenty of hazards, tones of WWII scrap, some modern coins, just a bit of bling, and the merest pinch of anything historic. My two oldest coins are 1 X George II halfpenny and I X George III halfpenny.

It's a great place for chilling out with my detector and I normally start just before the crack of dawn and chase the tide out and then retreat before the incoming tide but always moving slowly, so as not to be caught out by the relocating quick sands and deep mud.

Here are some of my finds from the last three Talacre sessions but sadly no treasure,
or brassy bling! :(

Nothing historic either. That is unless you class the brass Acme Thunderer whistle as being historic.

Cheers for that Chris...

Those fishing weights could very well be mine! lol

Any idea how far inland up the estuary we are allowed to detect?

I know we are not supposed to go on the foreshore owned by the Port, but given the river is tidal quite a way upstream, I was wondering if we could detect the foreshore further up?

Not sure about detecting sites further up stream but if you have ever fished Colwin Bay some of this stuff may be yours.

The Arches at Colwyn Bay was a favourite spot!

I live in Buckley so not too far from the coast....

Most of my fishing weights from Colwin Bay came from that end.

If you do decide to give Talacre a swing of the coil you should be prepared for all the WWII stuff that has a sneaky way of imitating decent finds, or coins. A couple of years ago I got a decent bell tone on my then EuroAce and managed to winkle out a lovely gold cygnet ring but five minutes later exactly the same signal produced a broken WWII 0.303 projectile. You win some and you lose some!
