Do you have to use headphones?
Wearing headphones has really started to pish me off, I'd much prefer not to use them. I can understand why you'd need to put them on for a rally, but when you're detecting alon - not so sure.

A few reasons...
The main one is the extra drain on your batterys using the external speaker.....probably half the batterys lifespan
Next is those quiet but good signals...the deep ones....you may if the wind is blowing miss them..
And if you hunt in "all metal mode" then you will almost definately struggle to hear the subtle tone changes....
I always used the standard headphones that came with my machine many years ago...
Recently these broke and i managed through a friend to get a £90 pair for £10......OMG the difference in comfort and sound is beyond words.....
He may have another set (they are old stock and obsolete as far as he is concerned)...if you want i will ask him for you and post them if you cover the postage.....

Thanks Blackadder and I would be tempted by a decent pair of head phones for a tenner (+ reasonable P&P). Would they happen to have a volume control on them?

No volume control which i thought would be a problem but its not......i just set my detectors volume to #2 and i can hear the tiniest signal loud and clear...and they are the comfiest pair i have used....they do warm your ears up tho..good for winter crap for summer
As for postage you pay what it costs....i'm not here to make a profit....if i was then i would have told you the phones cost £20 and not £10....
Dont get to excited i have to see if he has any more in the stock room.......

I only use headphones in windy conditions or when lots of other detectors are about.
I have a cheap pair of headphones that do the job nicely, cost me about £10 including p&P off Ebay, and they have individual volume control on each ear.
Not sure what a lot of the other machines are like but I think the Ace 250 is too loud to use with earphones without a volume control. But that's just me.........maybe.

Big E, luckily my detector has volume control......1 to 10 but any setting over 5 just enhances the quiet signals.....with these new phones i put the detector on #2 and its plenty loud enough even on the quiet signals...
I have never thought it before but the quality of the phones does have an effect on the machines performance

The T2 also has volume control so not so much of an issue, but the ACE doesn't and can be very annoying and deafening after a short time with phones on.
Not used them at all since having the T2. I have seen a couple of sets I am interested in, but waiting to see if I continue with this before splashing out more cash.

I always use headphone with my Ace and yes, the volume is a bit loud but as I've been working with jet aircraft for 20 years that's a good thing!!Big E wrote:Not sure what a lot of the other machines are like but I think the Ace 250 is too loud to use with earphones without a volume control. I don't use headphones, don't want someone sneaking up behind me and bashing me over the head lol, and I do like to catch a bit of wildlife while I am out and about

I always use headphones because I don't want to miss any deep faint signals. When hunting in the woods I use my Rattler headphones, they only have one ear cup so I can still hear if a Coyote, pig, bobcat, rattle snake or some other varmit is around.
