Last nights, late bit of gold from the beach. 22/06

Tides are wrong this week for detecting after work, so I grabbed an hour last night around from 21:30 until it was dark. I don't mind detecting in the dark, it doesn't make any difference, but it was raining and windy so an hour was about as much as I could bare.

Was rewarded with this ring, but the hallmark was very worn so I thought I'd test it's density to check how many carats it was because it was very heavy in comparison with a 9ct ring of a similar size.

Cup of water, Scobby Doo cup as a glass one tips my scales over the edge. Reset to Zero.

Ring suspended in water, just below the surface so as little cotton as possible is added to the equation.

Simple Math

3.91 / 0.25 = 15.64

Metal Density
Gold 19.3
Silver 10.5
Platinum 21.4
Palladium 12.0
Copper 9.0
9ct 10.9 to 12.7
14ct 12.9 to 14.6
18ct Yellow 15.2 to 15.9
18ct White 14.7 to 16.9
22ct 17.7 to 17.8
Sterling Silver 10.2 to 10.3
950 Platinum 20.1

18ct ! :) New it was heavy, have tested this method on many different rings and spot on.

Thas a clever way of working out the carats... very ingenious

This is not my method, it was just one that was discussed a while back on forum, that i've been using, so don't give me credit. I thought i'd just take some pictures of the process and share.

nice find and around £87 scrap value at today's prices, handy method for testing for carat I'll pass it on to the Mrs, as she buy's and sells jewelry and some of the older stuff can be quite worn

Nice find.
I thought it was worth adding :
For greater accuracy, the weight of the ring should be measured when the cup of water is on the scales. That is to say: place the cup of water on the scales, tare, place the ring alongside the cup, take the weight difference. Then repeat as previously with the string suspension. This reduces errors because cheap home-use scales may not have the same behaviour with 50 grams on them as they do with nothing on them.

Hi Barnet, I've been looking for reasonably priced digital scales on the internet, but can only find small 100g scales, who made yours?
