Detecting Dunwich beach

I seem to remenmber Dunwich beach is out of bounds due to the village and graveyard going over the cliff, last time I went there , which was some years ago, some poor old sods leg bones were sticking out of the cliff with his headstone above

I've detected Dunwich beach a few years back didn't find much,make sure you've got coil cover very shingly.

It's not a very good beach to detect, despite the history. lots of big stones and lots of modern junk.

A club member who used to detect Dunwich back in the late 80's-early 90's used to find hammered silver there. I tried Dunwich but didn't find much personally.

People used to dig and sieve to recover cut quarters in relative bulk.

Hi everyone
I went on a dig with local history society last summer and got the bug so got a machine and am hoping to go to Dunwich tomorrow. As others have said on here I find it difficult to know where to start, what is legal etc.... but got to start somewhere!

Dunwich seems quite appealing, but I'm a bit worried about whether it's permitted to detect or not.

It shows up as purple on the Crown Estate Map, East Suffolk don't have a policy about Metal Detecting as long as you abide by the rules and fill in holes etc they don't mind.

The issue is the National Trust - they have a place there and some internet sources say they own the beach. As far as I'm aware MD is a big No No for the NT.

Anybody know anything for sure about this?

I don’t know for sure, but might be good to contact one of the Rangers at the National Trust site for some advice on where their boundaries are.
In my experience they really appreciate people asking for information and trying to do the right thing.

I can confirm that metal detecting at Dunwich isn't permitted by the National Trust. It's a little bit annoying really, it's Crown Estate, but leased to the NT. It's also some of the only coast in that stretch that's not an SSSI! Ah well, keeps it nice I suppose.
