If you had a 18khz machine, could any 18khz coil be used with it if the plug was changed?

No.
For one thing, it's not just the coil that determines the frequency, it's the other electronic bits & bobs in the 'control box' , too.

However, there are a few compatible / interchangeable coils out there, so if you could specify what coils / machines you were considering experimenting with, we may have more ideas.
