Nell Tornado coils for Garrett Ace, any good ?
Nell Tornado coils for Garrett Ace, any good ?
Hi
My parnertner and I have recently got the Garrett ace 250 and 300i detectors, bought second hand in near new condition, both came with Nell Tornado coils ( both say "for Garrett" ) fitted and the Garrett coils that they originally came with, plus a load of extras, 2 pairs of headphones, 2 pointers, 2 blackada spades, trowls, finds bags etc, my partner finds the Nell coil a bit heavy, so may switch hers back to the stock coil, I'm ok with the weight.
My question is, are these larger coils any good or should we both switch to the stock coils.
Thanks in advance
Bill

My brother has used a Nell Tornado coil on his Garrett250. Covers lots of ground and he has found some decent artefacts.
Looks like you hunting is going to be garden based for the next few weeks though!

as said fantastic coil. used one myself on the 250. only downside was pinpointing and does get heavy after a few hours of swinging, more so when mud sticks to it.

I had a Nel Tornado for my EuroAce and loved it for the improved depth and better ground coverage. Made the mistake of selling on the EuroAce, Tornado coil, stock coil, and a wee sniper coil for getting into those tight spots!

Thanks for all the replys.
We'll keep the coils on then, might get a sling for the other half lol.
Cheers

I used the Nel Tornado coil on the ACE 250, its a great coil.
Here is a good tip if your wife finds it heavy (actually the extra weight is not the problem its how it changes the balance of the machine) - shorten the stem by one hole when using the Tornado rather than the standard coil (it restores the balance and feels much more like standard coil with a slightly longer stem)
ALL coils have advantages and disadvantages, so should be used in the right ground conditions.
A large coil gives extra depth, especially on larger targets, and increased ground coverage. So is ideal on fairly clean ground.
A small coil makes it easier to seperate targets in trashy ground (eg where the large goil might be over 2 bits of junk and mask the one good target between them the small coil might only be over the good target). Its also better on small shallow targets. Obviously also a lot easier to get into small gaps if working in a confined area.
This link gives ratings for each aspect of the Nel coils and helps hightlight the strengths of each

The standard coil is always what the manufacturer considers ths best compromise for the machine.
So yes the Nel Tornado is a great coil in the right conditions, but do not use it exclusively as in some situations the standard coil would be better.
FYI: I now use the Nox 800 and in addition to the standard coil also have the large and small coils and switch between them as required.

I run the Nel Tornado 7.5Khz coil on my x terra 705, it's an excellent piece of kit, very sensitive and loves the silver ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

coil selection is always a compromise
as per saffron
Small coils great in the trash
larger coils better on quite fields
very large coils loose sensitivity to small targets and are only deep on large objects
Stock coil is normally a good compromise. Assuming the original is up to par. They are mass produced and some preform better than others
Confidence plays a part. If you change a coil and then make a find. The brain says this coil is better where in realty there a Good chance both coils would have found it.
same with the machine. The grass always seems green. Must have the latest or bigger coil. The truth is it makes very little difference.
The biggest difference is the land. The second is know how to get the best from the machine.
