Conductive and ferrous. On the explorers

Post by Barbossa76 »

First day out in field with the Explorer xs, all the coins I found today were too worn to tell what they are.
Was never sure which setting of conductive or ferrous to use.
I re buried one of the coins and tested on both, conductive really hit on it even with coil raised.
Left me thinking it was deeper of the two?? Messed with fast and deep settings too as I went.
At least when I did play about with settings it didn't ruin the day,
And I'll definitely enjoy useing the detector. 7 or eight coins, none have detail left. Which is a first! [81/]

Never noticed any difference with depth, but then I keep deep mode on permanently, I find the audio on minelabs a bit soft and I can't get it loud enough, so deep mode makes faint signals louder, might also have been down to the ferrous and conductivity response from your coin, further one way or the other would make it sound different in either mode.

I like ferrous audio, then I always get a low tone for iron, but if you're using discrimination it probably won't matter which you use and I think it's down to personal preference anyway, I might use conductive more if it was my only detector, but I don't want it to behave too differently to my other two as I would find that confusing.

I use an etrac, very similar in how it works, and the settings, I use conductive sounds, as the tones hold up better at depth, this was how many used the explorer, for the same reason, as well as the tonal separation between iron and small non ferous targets when using multi tones.
It is realy down to personal choice, these machines need time to learn to get the best from them.

There's quite a good basic instructional video for the explorer on YouTube, I think it's the explorer 2 but the general stuff is the same.

Bit low res, looks like someone has digitised it from a vhs tape, but it's about 40 minutes long and covers the basics very well.

Cheers jamsey I'll look for that, I'm also going for a carry bag, I've got a new back of control box because the last cam lock under the control box must have cracked, it's all new and I want to keep it that way, so carry bag would mean less dismantling, so that will be next and a rain cover too

Be just a bit wary with the AS book, some things are just not necessarily so, not in the UK anyway! [88/]

With the Explorer II I always used the tones as the main way of deciding what to dig, particularly at depth. If a target was within range of the target ID I used the position of the crosshair to indicate what was junk and what was good. It was surprisingly consistent and I soon learned where the gold rings showed on the screen. [81/]

Thats what I had up on screen, the crosshair, I'll do that Fred, prefer to use my ears anyway.
Trial and error, mostly error! [87/]

Within limitations the crosshairs are pretty good as an indicator of small iron that doesn't need to be dug rather than showing what you should dig. [81/]
