First time on the beach

Post by miracleboy »

So went out for my first time on the beach today, well first time anywhere in fact as I can't get land permission! I have a Cscope 990XD and am an absolute beginner, so not sure I have the settings right - in fact that is my greatest concern.

The beach was nice, deserted it was mainly packed wet sand with a thin band of dry at the top. I found a ton of ringpulls, cans and odd bits of flat metal and also a few interesting things but nothing of value/real interest.

I played around with the settings, burying things to see if I could pick them up - mainly I am very concerned with the depth - even when holding the detector over something on the surface, ringpull, 1p piece etc I couldn't get it to detect it over a couple of inches above it - same if it was buried. I must be missing tons of stuff like this.

I think the 990 is okay for wet sand because it has a specific beach setting and is waterproof.

Does anyone have any advice on my settings to get the best depth - I'm not too bothered about having to dig everything - its all practice for me at this point!

Anyway after a couple of hours (half an hour spent investigating what seemed to be the top of a sunken boat sticking out of the sand!) my haul was;

loads of ringpulls/cans/random metal
1 huge iron hook with rope attached
2 toy cars
2 1p pieces
2 bits of kids costume jewellery
1 half of a mobile phone
1 coin thats so badly rusted I have no idea what it used to be

Going to try a different beach next time, one thats more touristy but still concerned with my settings at the moment. Here's what my settings look like that I mainly used today;
