my etrac floats

Post by Tomo »

last week, by accident i gave the etrac its first swimming lesson in the sea while digging a hole by the waters edge. It got a right old dunking too. Laid flat on the water for at Least 5 seconds. Whipped it out as quick as lightning and kissed it better. Gave it a shake off and it still worked perfect. Used it for about an hour more then left it in the car for 2 days lol (forgot about it getting a soaking). Eventually remembered it had a swim and decided to see what the damage was. Stripped the handle down to find one of the springs that makes contact with the battery was rusting so gave it a quick brush off with a brass brush. Inside was quite sandy too so gave it a good clean out. Checked inside the control box and Not an inkling of any water getting in. Set it back up and then found out the external speaker had been drowned. Water ob got through the grill and killed it. Need to Get a replacement part from maplins and solder back in. All in all Not a bad result for getting a good soaking and seems to be holding its own. The koss headphones have gone again at the plug (broken wire inside) so will have to sort them out again. Remember If you do decide to take your etrac apart it will void any warranty.

Blimey mate... I bet your heart skipped a beat! :-O

Good to hear that the damage was minimal. It could have been a lot worse!

Make sure when you replace the speaker you use one of the same impedance or it will damage it long term, I would also re-check a few times as salt water is very corrosive and even though you have dried it out, it may bubble up again.

For further reference, if you ever get an electronics wet the trick is to turn it off as soon as possible, disconnect the battery and completely dry out over a couple of days, you can speed this up by using a hair dryer. Most permanent damage is caused by people trying to use while still wet

I have to agree however make sure you dry off the stem when collapsing down your detector for storage after being on the beach as I panicked something rotten earlier this year as I too had been on the beach and was going off on holiday the following day and was taking mine with me and a grain of sand or two got in the shaft and I couldn't get it to split when trying to fold it away and it was literally only an hour before leaving for my plane before I managed to separate the stem as I took of the coil off from the stem then placed a long screwdriver through the holes that hold the coil in place then stood on top of the screwdriver and pulled on the top area of the shaft as hard as I could and it came apart :( :)

Never again will I take sand for granted :(

.
Glenfiddich :( :)
I'll keep an eye on that G, Thanks, good tip.
