Small coils in general have limited uses but I’ve always had one for my detectors.
I did have that SEF for my Explorer and it’s a good little performer
These small coils do well in small areas of heavy iron contamination to pick out good finds and they are much easier to use in dense woodland in the brambles. Another use is in tall stubble, especially between corn stems.
The downside is overall coverage and a small loss of depth, although the latter can be a minimal loss
You will find target ID is far more ‘bang on’ with small coils

I bought an 8x6 SEF second hand last year along with a new 12x10 SEF for my explorer xs. Both good coils, the small one was handy on ground with loads of iron, ground that’s been done to death with bigger coils and great for detecting around maize and OSR stubble.

The explorer, like all that family of detectors have slow recovery speed, great detectors as they are.
The 8x6 is a very well designed coil, and is, in my opinion, a great asset for these machines, retaining good depth, and helping with target separation in high trash areas, and in long grass / stubble.

Etrac , AT pro & equinox 800, c scope.
They were good in their day but since last year I’ve upgraded to a much lighter modern machine, can detect for hours longer now!geoff wrote: Tue Jul 12, 2022 1:59 pm The explorer, like all that family of detectors have slow recovery speed, great detectors as they are.

The SEF coils definitely improve the explorer and are more stable with the sensitivity whacked up than the stock coil. Unfortunately the explorer is going to have to go at some point, I can’t see me using it again.
Thanks for the replies... still love the Explorer SE and the X-Terra along with my Equinox
