Large Old Medal or Presentation Piece ?

Post by Dave8472 »

Hi all, pulled this one out over 6 inches down, still in the process of trying to clean it, any ideas, don't recognise the portrait at all, it does look to have a date on that looks like 1890

It is very large, 38mm dia, looks like copper/brass/bronze

That looks a cracker of a find !

I think it might be older than 1890. The hair and dress suggests 18th. C

Could the date be 1690 ?

Re Cleaning, I always do the hot water and washing up liquid with a toothbrush on everything to get the worst off, because I didn't know quite what it was made off I first gave it a short time in Baking soda, ok it not silver, then had a quick dip in hydrocloric acid, you must do this with caution, as it is brutal stuff, part cleaned it, its now in some vinigar, but it doesn't want to get any better, can see some of the markings but can't quite work out what it is saying

Could you write down all the letters from the bust side and all the words you can make out from the back?
Do i see the numbers 1890? or 1690
I think i see the words found and stone but not sure....

Think it may say Temple Sunday School, and there is a primary school next door to the Park ? looking at the 1907 map there was still a school in the same location

Still can't see the date may be 188? or 189?

Am going to try an overnighter in olive oil and lemon juice to see if I can clean it a bit more

Thanks all for you help ID'ing, still haven't found the exact same one on the internet, seems to be quite common, I did get excited when I first found it as it was quite deep, below the dept of the early Vic pennys at the same location

Will investigate more to see if I can trace the School, as there are some very close by

PS , still can't get it any cleaner, any ideas ?

The overnight in Olive Oil and Lemon didn't work, nore did Vinigar ? it even had some time in hydrocloric acid, but the crushy stuff won't budge, only thing I haven't tried yet it the electric thing I have read about on here

Olive oil trick can take weeks to lift the crud...
I personaly would not recommend the electrolsis on this item.....if you are not careful and havent done it before it will ruin it...
Find a crappy coin you arent fussed about and try for yourself....i ruined 2 old pennys experimenting with this and found it far to aggressive.....
