Just got myself scratching my head & took me a while to find what it was, found my first Portuguese 10 Reis 1732 coin and how it got to Guisborough is beyond me lol.

For starters, there were at least 3 British foot regiments in the Peninsular War 1808 - 1814 from the north-east:
51st, (2nd Yorkshire West Riding)
68th Durham Regiment
84th York and Lancaster
Cavalry and artillery regiments were not county-based, but must have included men from Yorkshire
And many of the Portuguese regiments were officered by British officers who were given permission to leave their own regiments and to soldier under the Portuguese flag. They were given a rank higher than their British rank, and good pay too-
Any soldier could have kept a Portuuese coin as a souvenir, and not let's forget that port was produced by the British in Oporto and we were, and still are, the biggest consumers of this superb wine.
