Silver Roman coins missing *UPDATE*

Post by Ctxjimmy »

Hi guys,
Today I received a email from pas in Lancashire who wrote to inform me that my small hoard of Denari were unaccounted for…….ie stolen. To say I’m sickened by this news is an understatement. I thought I might of got lucky and my coins were safe especially as my good friend had his treasure item stolen.
I doubt they will see the museum or even returned back to me as they are probably in some private collection now.
Here is a few images of the coins some of which are in amazing condition.
Cheers Jim

I should have mentioned this a month or so. The police have recovered all the coins and other stolen artefacts and coins. They are now being held as evidence so the treasure process is on hold until the court case is over.
I have to say I’m surprised the thief held onto them rather than selling them never to be seen again.
Also a really good effort in recovering all if not most of the stolen items.
Cheers Jim

I'm just so gutted for you. Can't begin to imagine how you must be feeling.
I don't know what to say really. It maybe worth contacting PAS and seeing if they had taken their photos yet? If so, the very least they can do, for a start, is email them to you.

Yes, gutted is the word here.
You should receive financial compensation. That you've had to no doubt take those beautiful coins to them at your own time and expense only to have them stolen with nothing more than a 'soz is absolutely disgusting
It's not what you don't know that is the problem. It's what you think you know, that just isn't so.

I have about 5 treasure items with LANCUM myself, no letter yet so fingers crossed. Although previously suggested that the receipt given says no financial recompense, it does have a caviat - highlighted below, which I feel would be, should be, activated in these cases.
Clearly there has been negligence on their behalf, if nothing else than unsafe storage

Well, I would go absolutely bonkers :)666 :)666 [84/]
Get onto the police and report the theft and push them to actually investigate what happened. The more feathers are ruffled the better.
There will be legal boffins on here who can offer more specific advice, but I would get a solicitors advice anyway. Hope they somehow appear ... beautiful coins, Liam :;@

Really sorry to hear about this - it's terrible. It's very damaging for the scheme too, given that detectorists are so good as to volunteer finds for the benefit of everyone. Unfortunately, it makes one think twice, which is a shame. Best that they are up front about it and make clear it is down to a certain individual.

On the positive, incredible find, really stunning. Any your photos are very good. No-one can take away that you were the first in over a thousand years to see those coins.

Ohh, I can't imagine how you must be feeling, I'm so sorry for you, you've got me worrying now,, I've got a Charles 11 half crown, silver maravades , several hammered coins and my entire collection of about 20 local trade tokens away with mine at the moment, makes you think doesn't it?

Thank you for all your comments and support. I’m still digesting what has happened. I know the police are investigating the multiple items missing and I can speak to them if I wish too. All I can offer is the images you see.
They were first deposited with the flo before covid and then more in between lockdowns. I just thought the delay on news was due to covid.
We will see what happens [72/]

Good luck Jim, your hoard deserves Chief Inspector Morse on the case!!
Keep us all posted on progress, we are all wishing you success, at least you have the pics to show the jury when the case comes up in the Old Bailey! Liam [81/]

If a detectorist had made treasure trove disappear he'd be looking at a prison sentence, i can't see how this is any different.

Oh wow, so bittersweet..

I really hope they turn up for you and they get some form of negligence punishment.
