VDI Chart ?

Post by PhilMax »

Just took the plunge and bought the Simplex. First of all what a nice machine, didn't realise how small it retracts down and it looks nice too. Big step up from my Garrett 150!

Main question, does anyone have a good VDI chart to refer to? I know they aren't exact but would be useful as I get my eye in, or ear in!

Cheers

To be honest the VDi's vary so much depending on ground condition that they are hardly applicable to different fields / soil types. Nevertheless, I was interested too so put this together over the space of a few months...

34-38 - Thick gold ring
34 - small silver hammered
35 - gold sovereign
35 - 39 - Ring pull
37 - gold coin, thick
42,43 - alum can trash, large (red)
46,47,48 - alum can, large piece
49,- alum can trash (large) small blue
55 - alu can section (pie slice)
60,62 -alu trash tin can large
63-65 - steel white bottle cap
65 - silver sixpence
66 - large silver hammered

Thanks. After more and more trips out I agree with you, its very variable. I now notch out first two 5 and 10 and dig everything else! If I start finding a lot if shotty shells I note the vdi and avoid them.

Hi All
I'm just starting with the Simplex and have developed the VDI chart shown at the start of this thread to help with early hunts. I've added some of my own air tests then tried to rationalise the zones and clusters of targets to help with the way I think of VDIs. These were colour-coded in a spreadsheet and printed out. I also folded it in two, along the aluminium /silver zone line, laminated it and hole-punched the corner so I can wear it, like an ID badge, as I hunt.
Obviously, it will need to be modified in the light of hunts but I hope that other Simplex users might also find the ideas I've added to the excellent table above useful.
All the best,

Hi Trev69
Glad you think the chart will be useful. I'm sweeping the garden in lockdown, checking numbers and sound. It's a superb all-rounder for the money. I'm sure that you'll enjoy swinging it.
All the best.

Hello weekend_offender, Welcome aboard the forum [81/]
As you're a newcomer to the hobby, my personal recommendation is to spend some time surfing the blue panel l;/ where there are subjects specifically for newcomers wishing to achieve a trouble free start in the hobby. Here's a 'couple' of examples considered to be essential early reading to set you on the right path from the start:
The MDF Guide for Newcomers and...........
Finding Somewhere to Legally Use Your Detector
Why Is it so difficult to obtain a 'permission' or a 'Buddy' with land?
Good Luck, enjoy your further research and your time in the MDF community [81/]

VDI in my mind is a total waste of time,Audio wins hands down every day and is also far more reliable at slightly greater depth as well.....with so many variable in the metal content one can never rely on the VDI No.
