Golden Mask 6

Post by Oldmember »

Hello,
First post, has anyone out there used the GM 6 which is fairly new.I see that it’s got 3 separate frequencies.,it looks like a useful machine.
If anyone has experience of this or the GM 5,I’d be grateful for the info.

It’s got 5,15&30 kHz.
5 is deep but very slow
30 is useless.
15khz is the only one to use. I was a tester for golden mask.

Also the 6 just like the 5+se has a thing called ‘disc depth’ you will spend all day adjusting this which is very annoying.
It tells the machine at what depth to reject unwanted stuff. Pointless in my opinion.

[20/] I got the GM 5+SE hear in the USA and love it it i set the controls up and leave it it has been stable even in hot ground . Like any detector you keep playing with the adjustments and your not going to be happy. Its my first GM and I did a lot of research on it and i read and reread the manual it was a little confusing at first, I still refer to it at times. For me its a keeper ::g

Greetings all, I’m new to the forum. I have a Golden Mask 6. Bought it at just over a year old and barely used. I find three frequencies more than enough for my needs and use 15 kHz most on my and club permissions. 5 kHz is deep and far from slow as I find it more than capable on iron infested sites even with the now older spider 12”, This frequency is quite capable of accurately pinpointing the target and recovery far faster than I can swing the coil. I know some ‘very experienced’ though rather impatient detectorists who curiously charge across a field swinging the coil wildly as if chased by a swarm of wasps taking huge strides missing great swathes of the ground they have walked. Funnily enough these are also the same folk often choosing to frequently ’upgrade’ their detectors. I feel that with this approach, no detector will be fast enough, no matter the model or brand one chooses. 5 and 15 kHz on the GM6 are by far the most useful for my particular detecting and again 15 kHz is deep, more than fast enough for pinpointing and sifting through the junk. With both 5 and 15 kHz, accurate VDI, target ID and variance in tone are ever present. I have not had cause to use 30 kHz much but have compared it side by side when on a target with the other two settings out on fields just out of interest. I found it located them with just as much accuracy and speed as with 5 or 15 kHz on targets that were at least 8 inches deep and very small and light indeed. I can’t comment on its effectiveness on gold as I have yet to find any in fields or woodland but I’ve not been at it long this time around having returned to detecting after a 38 year break. I don’t search beeches for the unfortunate losses of poor souls just trying to enjoy a day out, but it does beg the question as to why someone takes jewellery to the beach? If it’s your thing to search for it, theirs nowt wrong with that. I believe that patience, good consistent technique and research are far bigger factors than the price, make, model or all the plethora of modes and settings of your chosen detector. After all, if you don’t dig, you don’t find it. The best detector is one that you’ve learned to trust and like using not the next big marketing ploy designed to extract your hard earned cash. Take your time, be thorough and do your research and if it’s there you’ll more than likely find it sooner or later with a GM6 or a plethora of GM and other detectors. If you want a GM6 I can recommend it thoroughly, I have no intent to change mine even if aggressive marketing from other manufacturers suggests I should. Stay the right side of the turf one and all and good luck.

Hi Digger, and welcome to the forum. Just a note to point out that this topic is a few years old, but you may still get responses. [81/]

Cheers Brad, I came across it when considering a GM so thought I’d add my findings. I’m sure other looking for a GM will do the same so even if they don’t reply they have a users opinion to help them decide perhaps. I’m sure I’d have been just as satisfied with any of their other models and perhaps other brands too but I like my choice. Thanks for the heads up and taking the time to reply. I wish you many a gold dance.

Just a bit of an update in case anyone has been reading this thread. A few months ago I purchased a used 7” GM coil for stubble, uncut pasture and woodland detecting with my GM6. At 15khz this coil offers good depth and is superb among the iron or closely buried targets. At 30khz it really comes to life and it is exceptional at finding tiny, thin objects at depths I didn’t anticipate. It renders brilliant audio and excellent target VDI and ID and this is a much older model of coil now. It’s very sensitive to small objects and coins, even a 9 to 12 inches deep. At the same time I bought it’s larger 10.5” sibling, also used by the same previous owner. This coil is a little heavy for its size but not overly so and is built as is the 7” to withstand the rigours of use. These are both really, really tough coils and again the 10.5 is equally sensitive to large and small targets and deeper than any other coil I have by a good margin. So just because these coils are now a little ‘old school’ in appearance don’t dismiss them as old hat, they offer exceptional performance on my GM6. If either turn up anywhere at a good price, buy and try either as I’m pretty sure you won’t be disappointed. I’m set on GM machines for life I think. I’ve detected alongside just about everything else now and while all are pretty good with advantages and disadvantages just as with any machine including mine, I find this GM6 a really good all rounder on ploughed, pasture woodland, river banks and just about everywhere. It has a broad enough range of actually useful settings, speed and depth combined unlike most digital machines. I’ve never understood why you’d want to compromise one with the other when you can have both at the same time? It has probably the best carbon fibre shaft on the market certainly with the MK2 system, is very robust and offers a unique combined system of target identification that is reliable, accurate and easy to use. As for scuba diving with it, well thats not possible of course but let’s face it, if your doing that regularly and have the first clue about diving as I do, you’ll want a dedicated machine ergonomically and structurally designed for this purpose. The 7 is said to be even better but older coils I already have cannot be used with it so I will have to give it some thought. Anyway, good luck to all of you, whichever machine you use and maybe see you out there.
