To have a crack and a bend is unusual in a failure of this type implying the material is both low strength and brittle, not a combination you want in a digging implement subjected to bending loads! Assuming you weren't abusing it, then either the original material selection (including it's heat treatment condition) was wrong or a there is a batch of rogue material and/or incorrect heat treatment during the production process.
The choice of steel vs stainless steel should not be a factor in this type of failure, provided a suitable grade for either is used, both can offer the combination of high strength and toughness require for this application.
Both should also be able to tolerate a notched design.
