Newbie on the beach!

Hi everyone, I am a new to metal detectoring and am just starting out doing beaches casually. I bought an old metal detector about 12 years ago on a car boot for about a tenner on a whim. Since then it has sat in the attic. Recently my youngest asked for a metal detector after seeing a Pepper Pig cartoon in which they go "treasure hunting" (he is 5 this week). I took the opportunity to get out the old machine and take it on holiday with us to Ireland. We only got about half an hour in total during our stay but managed to have a quick look on 2 Donegal beaches. On the first we got lots of iron junk and tin cans but also a 1980 US Dime (Denver mint). On the second we got more junk and £2.03 in Stirling coins from within 2ft of each other. Needless to say we are now hooked (me most of all) and we plan on hitting the beach again as soon as we can. I am hoping we can get to Blackpool on Friday and I will let you know how we get on. Has anyone got any hints?

Hi hoggster,
can you inform us what type of md you have???? then maybe you'll get some tips and advice on how to best deal with the beaches.... as most mds do struggle with the wet / damp sand areas

most of all enjoy it, do not expect too much, fill in those holes and have a great day B-)

Thanks Scooby, I have a Savo Treasuremaster, which is basically a Whites Beachcomber BC60 assembled in the UK before Whites had there own facility here. I am hoping to see how things go and maybe get a Safari or similair as I would like to do some land detecting as well.

You will probably find it copes on the beach better than a lot of the fancy machines owned by some of the members of this board
