Coin lines - advice on how to find them?

Post by cleetop »

Hi all,
I'm looking for advice on how to find coin lines on a beach.
Years ago, I found about 15 small value coins in a straight line between two breakwaters. It was like magic! Unfortunately, I've never been able to repeat the trick.
I suppose every beach is different but, in general, where do you find coin lines? Close to the low water mark? Or somewhere else?
I've tried zig zagging from the dry sand to the sea and back but it would be helpful to know where to focus my efforts.
Thanks in advance

I know there is several post on this forum, even some with graphics that explains how coins and jewellery will deposit itself on the beach during time.. Vander from droppoint to resting place that will be semi dry during low tide..
But I cant find the link.. Maybe some one knows the link..

Depends on beach

Some sort by weight

Too high up you get blobs of aluminum

Soon as you find find a coin or fishing weights you are roughly in the right area. Start griding. But hot-spot can be quite short in length

You could be looking for an area that's only a few meters on a beach that's a miles long. That's where being local helps

Somewhere I never been before I look for dips, gullies and pebbles on the top

Generally I find here in the north west the text black sand line to be wrong. Your mileage might be different

This is an update on my original post.

Last week I spent about 2 hours on a beach with only a few scraps of aluminium to show. Then I found a lead weight. I thought about Koala's advice about a hot spot rather than a coin line. So I stayed in the same area and searched more thoroughly. In the space of about 20 minutes, I found 4 lead weights, a coin and several other odds and ends - all within about 2 paces from the original find.

And after that - nothing for the next hour! It was very strange, there was nothing on the surface to indicate that that patch of beach was any different.

It's as much about when to detect as where. Most beaches will produce when the conditions are right but, as previously observed, all beaches are different. Once you get the hang of them you can generally spot where things are likely to turn up based on your previous experiences and the current conditions. Whether the beach is prepared to co-operate is another matter entirely though. [88/]

I find that conditions can change very quickly, one tide may cut and produce while the next fills beyond recognition and render the beach barren. If you do spot a likely looking opportunity get stuck in and if it doesn't look right don't bother unless you just want fresh air and exercise. Today I dropped in at half a dozen spots and didn't detect at all but that's the advantage of being local. [81/]
