Minelab Explorer SE

Post by tappers »

I was talking to a pal of mine, i told him i've recently purchased a Minelab X Terra Pro. he's upgraded and has the Minelab Explorer SE sat there doing nothing and if I wanted it, make him an offer, a mate of mine is looking for a decent one, 2nd hand, is this regarded as a good machine, I know it's a little dated.

Of course, the Minelab explorer SE is a good metal detector, I have an 11" E-Trac coil, stable even at maximum sensitivity.
Unfortunately compared to newer tools it's a bit heavy, 4.18 lbs (1.9 kg)
Here in Italy it is on sale from 250 to 400 Euro

Hi
I’m still using an explorer se after a few years and having plenty of success with it. I use the Detech 13 inch coil and get great depth with it.
Yes..it’s heavy and processes a little slow compared to new machines but just swing low and slow.
I’ve found it runs best setting it so that the only discrim crossed out is nails. Leave everything else blank. Should just leave top left corner blacked out on display. Run recovery on deep, manual sensitivity and I prefer to run in ferrous mode so all iron tones are very deep. Sensitivity between 16-25..usually alway chatters above that on the Suffolk clay !
I got a much better rechargeable battery for it a while back and will do all day with it and still use only half the charge. I found it doesn’t work as well on AA batteries for some reason..not sure why.
The Andy sabbisch book has been helpful and I think if you look back on previous posts on se’s some people have put the settings down.. basically the 10/6 or 10/8 program. You’ll figure out what the tones and numbers relate to quite quickly for example 07-26 is usually a penny or halfpenny George 2nd upwards 😉.
I’ll be switching to a manticore soon, but I’ve never regretted buying the se. Good luck with it 👍🏻

They are almost the same adjustments that I also use, only the sensitivity with the 11" coil is not necessary to lower it, for discrimination based only on sounds it is easy to recognize the iron.

The detech coil is really that good, how does it behave on dew-soaked grass?
There's definitely no correlation, but I put the Detech DD13" coil on a Garrett GTI 2500 for testing and the performance was worse than the original 12.5" imaging, so I took it off right away, but I was disappointed.

It's probably a problem with the metal detector and not with the coil, maybe it has little power...

I also have a 15 Coiltek Wot, but it's too sensitive to EMI and moisture on grass, I hardly use it anymore.

I would also like to switch to rechargeable batteries, recently I had to clean the the contacts of the battery pack with very fine sandpaper, placing the metal detector on the ground and raising it, went out, now everything is ok.

I use the 13 inch detech coil and I have a few pasture and paddock permissions that are still wet or coated in dew in mornings and I can’t say I’ve encounted any issues to be honest. Can be a little tricky sometimes on trashy/busy land due to it nulling out.
Battery wise I’d strongly recommend the lithium ML3400. I can do at least 2 long trips on 1 charge !!! Something I understand I’d never achieve with the manti 😬
