A squirrels tale

Post by cantona1 »

Or, to be more precise three squirrels tails,
1717168485099.jpg

Not sure if it's some kind of weird Devonian voodoo (I'm cornish, they're all a bit odd if you ask me, especially the one that I married😁) anyway, I found the first one in the field across the road just inside the gate, the next two were in the field across the road inside two more gates😬 I'm wondering if they still believe they have to make a sacrifice to the field gods for a good harvestπŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
So, what do I do with them? 50 years ago they would have been hanging from the aerial of my scooter😁 maybe I could fix one to my car aerial and see if anyone notices? Or, should I put them back in the fields to appease the gods? They've done a great job drying them out by the wayπŸ‘

Answers on a postcard please

Too late, Charlie's nicked one😁

Apparently (no I didn't know - just Googled it), squirrels' tails are designed to fall off if they are trapped or grabbed by a predator.... maybe a natural thing rather than Cornish voodoo!

Or perhaps one of Charlie's relatives had something to do with it! [88/]

The things you learn from this forum... also, apparently, squirrel tail hairs are particularly good for making fishing flies....

I think that seems more likely.

Cute cat that Charlie though.

I seem to think the brushes I used to use to paint Airfix kits had squirrel hair.

Some of my best brushes are Squirrels hair and they were expensive!

This is just getting weirder now, I've got a vision of someone dressed head to toe in squirrel fur dancing around an effigy of a squirrel scattering tails in a corner of the fieldπŸ‘Ή offering an incantation to the field gods. Strange lot these Devonians🀷 Gotta be over 50 of the things here now😁

Did you notice any other animal "bits" on the fences or hedges? Old school gamekeepers would make a gibbet and hang any vermin they caught from it to warn the rest off and to show the land owners they were doing their job.
I still see crows and pigeons hung along the barbed wire.

No, nothing Clint, When I was a kid my grand dad used to hang up crows and odds and sods to scare birds off the crop. I've not seen anything like this before though. It's like the Devon chainsaw massacre in these 2 fields at the minute, it's a helluva lot of squirrels though, must have taken ages to shoot that lot😁

That is getting weird, lived in Cornwall and Devon most of my life and have never come across abandoned Squirrels tales. What part of Devon are you in? I think I might avoid it when I'm out detecting in case I get offered up as a sacrifice to the field Gods [27/]
