Celtic Stater distribution?

Post by Sirbleepsalot »

Hi all, I hope things are well. I have had the privilege of seeing some stunning Staters posted by the lucky few on here who find them, including one found on the beach!

To me it's the Holy Grail of detecting finds (aside from the ACTUAL Grail) but my understanding is their main usage was in the Southern counties. I'm lucky enough to go detecting in Northumberland/Cumbria but I suspect any that made their way up here will be very few and far between; are there many records of finds up here or Scotland?

Cheers [81/]

Hi. Cumbria based here. Up here was a coinless society still in such times. Therefore coins are very rare as you can see by the 2 recorded above.

Thanks to you all for the fantastic info you've posted; I've been going through it all day! I do admit there appear to be more than I had thought so fingers crossed (2:)

I do know two out of the three known examples of an Eddy III Double Leopard were found in the Tyne so watch this space... [49/]

Seriously, some great info as I knew practically 0 about Celtic artefacts so always learning. On a "lighter" note I was down the beach at 5 this morning; one 20p, one 1p, one 5p and two bimetallic pound coins. Sad thing is, one of them is counterfeit!, inner section has plating flaking off and is loose from the outer bit. I can't even find an honest spendable!

Cheers!
