Camp sites near crown beaches

Post by cport80 »

Hi all,

So busy with work at the moment that I'm not getting much time to go detecting however the other half has decided she wants to try camping next year. I wondered if any of you know any tent-friendly camp sites within walking distance of crown estate beaches - preferably the nice sandy holiday type without restrictive bylaws, firing ranges or requiring further detecting permits. Since junior will be with us we want to find somewhere as safe & clean as possible in England or Wales. Something for them to do if it rains would be a bonus as I'll be on that beach whatever the weather :D

There's loads of campsites in anglesey and the lleyn peninsular, all mostly have clean sandy beaches, and most importantly are crown estate, and not to far to travel.

Cheers for the tip Phil,

Some particularly nice looking spots around the lleyn peninsular - A site in Pwllheli caught my eye with their indoor heated pool and kids playground. Camping fields right next to the beach and good views of Snowdon so it ticks all the boxes for me. I've shown my other half where to find the crown estate maps so we'll see what she comes up with :)

Lleyn peninsular brilliant area I last went their about 6 yrs ago in the really hot summer. I used to sit on Criccieth beach watching the sun go down and the castle is just by the beach, this could be a good beach. Anglesey too at llandonna a viking hoard was found and coins still coming up, lovely beach but no camp site near that I know of.
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

Lots of nice beaches on the Lleyn Peninsular my favourite is Abersoch for detecting but plenty more to try. Here are a few to have a go at, have detected on about half of them. Nice gold Black Onyx signet ring came off Abersoch Harbour Beach

Thanks for all the tips folks, nice to hear about your experiences in these places too.

This is exactly the sort of info I was hoping for. We saw the castle at Criccieth but I would have thought that beach would be off limits being so close to the castle. It seems ok on the crown estate map though and close enough to Pwllheli for a day trip. Llandonna sounds very interesting too with those viking finds. I'll try to remember to avoid Wells.

I hadn't thought of crossing over to N.I. and if the beaches are that empty I wouldn't expect to find much unless they have been historically important. Any which spring to mind otb? If we get a few more suggestions this might become the first travel guide for detectorists :)
