Pinpointer abrasion

I saw a youtube vid on pinpointer use, the fella mentioned to look out for wear / abrasion on the business end ... I took him at his word & I stick a few of those finger rubber things watchmakers use over the last section, usually lasts a couple of sessions & cheap as chips off amazon.

I am pleased that my own pinpointer was supplied with two hard-shell protection cases for the detection end of the gadget. But I'm just not comfortable that a pinpointer is really intended to be a digging or scraping implement.

Given what a good pinpointer costs, using a trowel or similar must surely be the way to go? I am concerned that the digging or scraping side loads generated on a pinpointer body, if they don't break it, are likely to weaken any joins, thereby making water and dirt ingress more likely.

But, hey, if anyone is content to dig or scrape with a pinpointer, then a detection tip covering is certainly better than none at all.

A 40mm length of heatshrink sleeving over the tip, possibly secured with some light glue, like Evostik, will give protection lasting months.

I found that simply sliding my MI6 into and out of the XP holster was enough to cause some light abrasion. I bought a flexible plastic protector from one of the main XP dealers and all is well.

I don’t think that abrasion or scratches to the plastic casing have any impact on the performance and it’s purely cosmetic issue.

Ps. Use other tools than your pinpointer for digging
