Giving the lead balls a rest .

Post by swansea jack »

Hi all
Big tides seen me heading west to a Gower beach hoping for something memorable. I arrived a little early as the tide was only just leaving the main slope of the beach. I started detecting on the slope for half an hour to allow more of the beach to be uncovered by the retreating tide.I didn't hang around to long as one piece of ally scrap after another surfaced to anoy me. [84/]

I wondered around prety aimlessly on the flatter sand digging more molten blobs of ally and a few ring pulls. My Nox hit a sweet tone 18 and a 303 bullet was up after two spades full, this signalled to me I was getting close to where I wanted to be. For the next hour or more little else except a few 303 surface. I had a banging signal and a large key echelon came up from an inch or so down, Its obviously been around on the surface as it had a couple of barnacles on it. I'm thinling to myself it must have been a big door or may be a treasure chest as it was a fair old size. A couple of copper ships nails and a screw punctuated the gaps between more 303.

First ring of the day rang out with a low 12, plated chrome I think but of low quality. A couple shallow fishing weight gave some really good signals, triggering rise in the old heart rate for just a short while anyway [88/] , Another ring or so I thought as I spotted it turning over the sandy mud, but it turned out to stainless steel collar off something.

More 303 bullets kepy me busy when a sweet 21 on the Nox rang out, I knew it wasn't a 303 so off goes the old ticker and my imagination, only to be disappointed to find another bullet but this time a metal jacket 9mm bullet. A few more steps and the nox IDwas reading 12 and more disapointment as a 3/8 x 1/2 inch plain lead bullet was uncovered.

A banging 22 signaled my first coin of the session and what turned out to be the one and only, but it was a pound so not so bad. A few more steps and another ID 21 and I'm confident its another pound coin, pride before a fall as they say, another 9mm bullet finds it's way into my bag. A bouncy 12/13 anounced the second ring, at the time I wasn't very impressed with it [54/] I couldn't imediately see any sort of hallmark, the ID numbers were too low for silver, so I just chucked it into a finds box for later inspection. When I did get it home and gave it a wash I could seen what I thought was a small collection of letters. The jewellers loop revealed the numbers 950 and B BROS with a rose, after consulting the internet it turns out the ring is 950 paladium made in Sheffield by either Baum Brothers or Berker Brothers.

The tide was rushing in now and I was hadly having time to dig my last few 303 before the tide rushed over my digs 88/] I was going to give the dry sand a quick half an hour but when I looked at my watch it was half past four, blimey where has the last four and half hours gone. OK nothing earth shatering to report but never the less an enjoyable afternoon.

Hi Kevin
The tide goes back a very long way on big tides of the Bristol channel so it doesn't see a huge amount of human activity like the top of the beach.

Enjoyed reading that.
Well done on ID as Paladium.
If you get a seaweed line, often good for a weight or two but mind the hooks.
Cheers, [81/]

Great read, thanks for taking the time. I used to do a load of beach detecting and that has rekindled my interest, I last found a spot where pre decimals were eroding out the dunes so may give it a go. TBH a handful of fishing weights and/or spendables = a great day out. Beach detecting sparked my detecting passion and you never forget your 1st love (2:)

Hi Fred
To be honest the sites I visited to sell scrap precious metals, there's not a lot of difference between Palladium and 9ct Gold, out of curio what site do you use. It's funny I always thought the paladium was even rarer than Platinium [87/] [81/] [81/]
